Today we celebrated a milestone for Connecticut’s public-sector workforce. DAS joined our partners at Connecticut Department of Transportation, Connecticut Department of Labor, and CEUI to recognize the first class of CTDOT Transportation Maintainer Registered Apprentices, new and innovative pathway into state service that combines hands-on learning, high-quality training, and long-term career growth. DAS Deputy Commissioner and Chief Human Resources Officer Nicholas Hermes spoke about the importance of expanding workforce pipelines and investing in the next generation of public servants. This partnership is a model for how state agencies and labor can work together to recruit, train, and retain the skilled professionals who keep Connecticut moving. Congratulations to the inaugural class of Registered Apprentices, and thank you for choosing a career in service to our state. We’re proud to support your journey.

As we prepare for the start of Hanukkah on December 14 and for many other winter celebrations soon to follow, our homes will begin to fill with candles, decorations, festive meals, and visits from friends and family. It’s a joyful time of year, but also a time when the risk of home fires increases. To help keep our communities safe, we’ve put together a short video with simple, practical fire-safety tips you can use throughout the winter holiday season. Whether you observe Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or simply enjoy decorating and gathering with loved ones, these reminders go a long way in protecting your home and family. Some of the key tips include: 🕯️ Keeping candles on stable, nonflammable surfaces and never leaving them unattended ✨ Choosing flame-resistant decorations and inspecting holiday lights before use 🍳 Staying in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop 🚭 Helping guests smoke safely outdoors and disposing of smoking materials correctly 🔔 Testing your smoke alarms and reviewing your home escape plan These may seem simple, but they prevent some of the most common holiday fire hazards. Watch the video below and share these tips with your family, friends, and community.

A Thanksgiving message from Commissioner Michelle Gilman to our DAS colleagues: As we enter this season of gratitude, I want to take a moment to wish you and your families a very happy Thanksgiving and to thank you for your hard work and dedication throughout the year. Every division of DAS has incredible accomplishments to boast about around the Thanksgiving table. Whether you worked on completing a major state construction project (I hear we recently cut the ribbon on a big one!), coordinated new office space for a state agency, rolled out a new child welfare database system to improve efficiency at a sister agency, provided essential human resources, fiscal or legal support, helped the state become the customer of choice for our vendors, improved safety for the people who will drive more than 30 million miles in state vehicles this year, or any of the other important roles our agency does every day, you have made a real and lasting difference. I am so thankful to work for an agency as amazing as DAS, and that is entirely because of you. We are so fortunate to work alongside such talented, dedicated people who care deeply about making sure government works for the residents of Connecticut. Your commitment to excellence, collaboration, and public service is what makes DAS such a special place to serve. As you gather with friends, family, and loved ones, I hope you take pride in all that you’ve helped accomplish this year. Please also take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy the holiday.
