Four years ago, Dylan Green made the commitment to place 50% women or people who identify as women in the roles we work, nearly half of which have been LGBTQ, BIPOC, or who have other marginalized identities. 2023 was the first year in which we fell short of the 50% commitment - by 8% - due in large part to employers' overwhelming shift back to requiring in-person work. This transition has had a disproportionate impact on women, who spend nearly double the time men spend on primary child care & elderly care, according to recent studies. Remote work enables women to more easily balance work & household responsibilities by cutting out substantial commute times & providing greater flexibility in their schedules. As a result, if a job offer does not allow for remote work, women, are statistically more likely to turn down the offer. There are many studies about the benefits of remote work for women’s labor force participation & career advancements. Shoutout to those employers we worked with in 2023 who are still offering fully remote opportunities, including UtilityAPI, Coho, an ERM Group company, Coalition for Community Solar Access, Aries Clean Technologies, Constellation, Gage Zero, ClimeCo, CleanCapital & CleanChoice Energy, many of which we were able to place women, LGBTQ &/or BIPOC candidates with. We look forward to continuing to fulfill our 50% commitment in 2024 & beyond by working especially closely with employers that are attuned to the impact of hybrid & in-person versus remote work, particularly on women. If you’re a clean energy employer & need help scaling your workforce efficiently with top tier, diverse candidates, send Catherine McLean or Aimee Bigwood a message directly. Karen Conover helped found WRISE — and in the process shaped both a generation of women leaders and the clean energy industry itself. Today, WRISE has 3,000+ members and 47 chapters advancing diversity across renewables. But Karen’s influence goes further: at 29, she launched Global Energy Concepts, a wind power pioneer later acquired by DNV, helping wind energy scale in the U.S. and abroad. Two decades later, she’s still mentoring women in clean energy — including through her work with REpowering Schools — and reflecting on what’s changed, and what hasn’t. To mark WRISE’s 20th anniversary, I spoke with Karen about: ⚡ What it takes to build a company from scratch 🌎 Global lessons U.S. renewables still need to learn 📈 Why WRISE’s decision to offer company-wide memberships was a turning point 💡 Her advice for emerging leaders One moment that stood out: seeing companies who were hesitant about diversity realize, firsthand, how much stronger their teams became when they invested in women. Thank you, Karen — and thank you to everyone who has helped build Women of Renewable Industries and Sustainable Energy (WRISE) over the past 20 years, including its sponsors: Google, RWE, SOLV Energy, Qcells EPC, Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, Ørsted, U.S. Bank, Onyx Renewables, DNV, Soltage LLC, Invenergy, EDP, Mortenson, LevelTen Energy, Spearmint Energy, Aypa Power, Vestas, Longroad Energy, The AES Corporation, Cordelio Power, Copia Power, Primsergy Solar, Pivot Energy, Pattern Energy, OW Ocean Winds, Origis Energy, Leeward Renewable Energy, GridStor, and Pine Gate Renewables. 🎧 Listen in — link to the full Green Light podcast episode is in the comments. Congrats, Amy Lloyd, on being appointed CFO at EDF power solutions North America! She brings over two decades of experience from Citigroup Global Capital Markets Inc., Barclays, and ACS Infrastructure Development, Inc., and has helped raise or deploy more than $25 billion in private financing for over 20 major infrastructure projects worldwide. She will now help steer EDF’s expansion as it delivers more solar and storage projects across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. At Dylan Green, we see firsthand how critical senior finance executives are in today’s market. Whether it’s structuring billion-dollar project portfolios, navigating debt markets, or securing long-term growth capital, the right CFO can make all the difference in accelerating the energy transition. What’s particularly exciting is the perspective Amy brings from outside the renewables industry. As solar and storage scale to meet global demand, drawing on the financial discipline and market sophistication of more developed industries will be key to sustaining growth. What an inspiring week at ACP's EmpowHER conference in Charlotte! It was such a privilege to spend more time with incredible women leaders in cleantech like Doseke Akporiaye at Women of Renewable Industries and Sustainable Energy (WRISE); Constance Thompson, at American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE); Johnelle Brown, at American Clean Power Association (ACP); and Zoë Gamble at CleanChoice Energy. From thought-provoking sessions on emerging policy trends and financing the energy transition to candid conversations about navigating leadership challenges and building diverse executive teams, the agenda delivered both inspiration and actionable takeaways. The discussions around scaling clean energy with equity in mind were especially impactful, underscoring why gatherings like EmpowHER are so critical for our industry. We also had so much fun interviewing Program Co-Chairs Kelly Speakes-Backman and Stephanie Smith — along with other senior women leaders in clean energy including Kelly Veney Darnell at ACP, Loraine Farberg at Spearmint Energy, Tamika Jacques, at Avangrid, and Kate Johnson at Advanced Energy United. This year’s EmpowHER featured a phenomenal lineup of women shaping the future of clean energy, including: Theresa Eaton, Princess Fuller, Ann Anthony at Oberon Fuels, Amanda K. at Leeward Renewable Energy, Charity Pennock at North Street Group, Prayalini (Pri) Sathanantham, at Lianas Collective, Melanie C. Kelly at Pivot Energy, Laura Schepis, Andrea Steiner, Dawn Thorpe at Sparrow Energy Services, & Rachel B. Williams at Tetra Tech. Huge shoutout again to the sponsors — Array Technologies, RWE, Vestas, and First Solar — for making this important event possible. I already can't wait for next year's conference! If you're expanding your senior leadership team — or exploring your next career step — I’d be happy to connect with you. Kelly Speakes-Backman, EVP of Public Affairs at Invenergy, brought her trademark energy and candor to EmpowHER in Charlotte this week — serving as Program Co-Chair alongside Stephanie Smith of Eolian. ⚡️ When we spoke, Kelly shared why she committed to helping launch this new executive-level women’s conference: 🗣️ “It’s critically important that we have diverse women — we are part of that diversity — and that we have our voices heard, raising each other up into leadership positions. I want to be a part of that.” She also hopes attendees leave EmpowHER with something intangible yet powerful: 🗣️ “Ground yourself here, and take that grounding back — maybe not newfound, but reinvigorated. Take some swagger back to the office and tell someone what you think. That’s important.” Kelly is one of many remarkable senior women leaders featured at EmpowHER this year, alongside: Theresa Eaton, Princess Fuller, Ann Anthony at Oberon Fuels, Kelly Veney Darnell, Amanda K. at Leeward Renewable Energy, Charity Pennock at North Street Group, Prayalini (Pri) Sathanantham, at Lianas Collective, Virginia "Ginny" Clarke, Loraine Farberg at Spearmint Energy, Zoë Gamble at CleanChoice Energy, Melanie C. Kelly at Pivot Energy, Kristina Lund at Pattern Energy, Rachel Paisley, Laura Schepis, Andrea Steiner, Dawn Thorpe at Sparrow Energy Services, & Rachel B. Williams at Tetra Tech. Huge thanks to American Clean Power Association (ACP), Program Co-Chairs Kelly Speakes-Backman & Stephanie Smith, and sponsors — Array Technologies, RWE, Vestas, and First Solar — for making this inspiring event possible.
