Huge thanks to Pinterest for hosting me for a fireside chat on health, wellness, and emerging trends in healthcare and pharma advertising. Here are a few of my biggest takeaways from what was discussed at the event: 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. EMARKETER survey data shows that 56% of respondents among all age groups research health topics on social media at least some of the time. This rises to 76% of Gen Z and 64% of millennials who use social media to look up health information. To be clear, these aren’t just folks who are stumbling on health content when using social media—they actively look for it. What’s more, 47% of Gen Zers and 37% of millennials start their online searches for medical information on social media, per our survey. These trends are especially relevant to Pinterest, which functions not just as a social platform but as a visual search and discovery engine. 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. According to our ad forecasts, social media ad spending in healthcare and pharma surpassed linear TV for the first time this year. That’s not to say linear isn’t important—it's still a core way for healthcare and pharma brands to reach certain target audiences (e.g., Boomers, Gen X) during major live events, evening news, etc. But marketers in this sector are increasingly turning to social to meet younger consumers where they are. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬. It’s no secret that most people don’t have the best perception of healthcare and pharma brands, or the system overall. That’s why more brands in this space are leaning on influencer marketing to close the gap with authentic and relatable content from trusted voices. However, companies also have a responsibility to deliver more credible messaging through their advertising. People’s decisions about their health are so high-stakes, which means brands must respond to the moment by prioritizing facts over unrealistic claims, being transparent about costs, access, and risks, and leaning on testimonials from medical experts.
