Each month we highlight a #CEO who’s an ExecThread member. Today we spotlight Greg Fell, CEO of Toledo Jet Center who shares some #career tips. 1) Who are you? “I’m #technologist who was unhappy being slotted as a CIO. I transitioned to CEO roles, moving first sideways to gain more #skills and then into COO & CEO roles. I’m currently CEO of Toledo Jet Center (TLCJET) and a Board Member (and former interim CEO) at Infinite Reality which rebranded as Napster Corp., a new #unicorn in agentic #AI. 2. How did you find your current CEO role? “I was on an 18-mo search to find all the right puzzle pieces to put together a full-service private jet company. TLCJET has 2 Maintenance locations, Aircraft Management, Aircraft Sales & Charter Operations. The financial ability to do so came via prior successes as CEO at Infinite Reality and JETNET which I helped sell to #privateequity.” 3. What’s been the hardest part of being CEO? “People decisions. I do Myers-Briggs on my direct reports. I’m unusual as a CEO in that I’m an #ENFP. That means the instinct that gives me #energy is helping people. That's a great quality as a nurse or teacher but is challenging as a CEO. The facts, not your feelings, ultimately drive your #business. Not all CEO's have the same challenges; the hardest decisions are ones that go against your core. Study yourself to be a better CEO.” 4. What’s been most fulfilling about being CEO? “I get satisfaction from seeing a culture of #success emerge in a company, the team functioning well and pushing on the flywheel in a positive direction. Seeing team members succeed in their #goals is very fulfilling.” 5. “Everyone wants to be in the driver’s seat but no one knows what it means to be in the driver’s seat until you’re in it.” What does this quote in relation to being CEO mean to you? “Everyone see's the glory as if being a CEO is "winning" but the truth is you just have a skillset that matches well to the role. I’ve had people shadow me for years. 75% realize after a few days that being CEO is not as easy as they thought. Making personnel decisions, budget adjustments and finding a path for the company 24/7 is not for everyone.” 6. What person in your life has inspired you most, and why? “I’ve had many great mentors in my career and they all had 1 thing in common — they saw something in me I didn't see in myself. I’ve tried to pay those #mentors back with the same #philosophy to my mentee's. 50 years ago this week, on 8/25/75, the iconic #song (and #album) “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen was released by Columbia Records. It’s a bit surprising to me that more attention hasn’t been given to the #anniversary especially since its considered one of the greatest albums of all time, and a cultural landmark. What I find most interesting and inspiring about the anniversary of #BornToRun is that the key messages of the song remain as relevant today as they did back in the summer of 1975 when it was released. As one news publication put it just one day ago, “Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born to Run’ still speaks to a nation vacillating between #hope and despair.” The song doesn’t make a political statement as much as it makes a statement of the dilemma facing most humans in that “it’s an anthem of wanting to escape the weight and pressure of life” according to a recent article “The Meaning Behind the Passionate Song, Born to Run”, by American Songwriter. If you plug the meaning of “Born to Run” into AI you get the following: "Born to Run means having an inherent urge for #freedom, and a desire to break free from restrictive situations or a monotonous life.” And key phrases that are closely associated with the song, when you look it up, are: - a call to freedom - a drive for more - youthful #aspiration Others have described the song as an “anthem of hope” and a “rallying cry for those who feel trapped”, and a song in which a better #future and more rebellious spirit are interwoven. These messages are as relevant today as they were 50 years ago, if not more so. People are always striving, and aspiring for more — it’s why we job search, it’s why we travel, it’s why we innovate, and create. So on this 50th anniversary of the release of “Born to Run”, let’s celebrate — and never forget — the "runaway American #dream"!

“#Family, #friends, and a long walk in the woods with my dog — as well as being a collaborative leader of #missiondriven businesses who is curious (and creative) about bringing new ideas to market.” 3) What Board(s) are you currently on, and how did you first find out about the opportunity(s)? - Octane11 - LiftForward - Eden Village Camp “With Octane11 & LiftForward I was a friend and personal advisor to each CEO before being asked to join the board. With Eden Village Camp a former business colleague asked me to join this non-profit board. I also served on a public company board, Mobius Management Systems, and mention this because I found out about the opportunity from a prominent VC who was serving on the board, and who was, at the time, the lead investor in a company where I was serving as CEO - who wanted me to learn how a public company board operates.” 4) What advice would you give someone trying to secure their 1st Board Director role?
“Find a CEO and company you want to support, and think how you can add value through your relevant experience, your #network, and your creativity; and when you do then share your ideas freely with the CEO, board members, and investors. Also, learn how boards work by getting started in any board role — on an advisory board, a #nonprofit board, or a subcommittee of a board.” 5) What’s your favorite quote?
“Sometimes you don’t know what you know”. “It’s a twist on a more notable quote: “Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know.” The point is to not brag, and to remember you must tap into your #knowledge and learned #wisdom in support of the company as a board director.” 6) Career advice in three words?
“Curious, Positive, Proactive.” 7) Anything else you’d like to add?
“It is extremely rewarding to be a giver, and support CEOs and companies that are working through the challenges of building something of value. But, it’s not all about giving.
