We're incredibly excited to share a significant milestone for Horton's Kids: the opening of our third and largest distribution center! This new center, which officially opened on August 23, allows us to expand our reach and support even more families in our community. This achievement wouldn't have been possible without the overwhelming success of our Stock the Shelves supplies drive this past spring. Thanks to the amazing generosity of the D.C. community and sponsors, we've received tons of donations of food, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies to help families in need. These aren't just "items" – they're the building blocks for stability, allowing our kids to focus on school, feel confident, fed, safe and happy, and truly reach their potential. Thank you to everyone who donated to help further our mission! Interested in learning more, or getting involved in our mission through volunteering or donating? Horton’s Kids empowers children growing up in DC’s most under-resourced communities so that they can be successful.
About us
For over 30 years, Horton’s Kids has empowered children growing up in Southeast DC’s most under-resourced neighborhoods. We support the physical, educational, and social-emotional development of over 600 PreK-12 grade students and their families annually so that they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. Our holistic, multi-generational approach provides comprehensive programs and services for the children as well as their parents and caregivers—targeting economic assets including housing, job readiness, and health and well-being to promote each individual child’s success. Horton’s Kids provides support and services to children close to home. From our earliest years on basketball courts and picnic tables, to establishing Community Resource Centers within the housing developments we serve, we are committed to creating safe places for children to learn and thrive.

We’re deeply honored to be included in Axios DC's recent article, “From hotlines to hot meals: D.C.'s aid network surges in federal crackdown,” spotlighting local aid organizations that have stepped up to meet the city's growing needs amid a time of uncertainty. We’re filled with gratitude for this recognition of community-driven resilience. As we gear up for the start of our school-year programming in September, we’re focused on the critical role we play Hortons Kids' academic growth, and also in supporting their parents, families and care-givers in a holistic way. Whether it’s providing tutoring, meals, household necessities, mental health support, or simply a stable place to connect and learn, we are here to serve our neighbors, and in doing so, our great city. Here’s to another impactful year ahead - working together, heart and soul, for our entire D.C. community. 🌞 SummerFest is in full swing at Horton’s Kids! Here is an update on what we have been working on this summer. For the past five weeks, we've welcomed more than 150 students from rising grades K–9 to our five-week summer program that blends academics, enrichment, and social-emotional learning in a fun and supportive environment. 📚 Each day begins with two hours of personalized math and literacy instruction led by certified teachers in small class settings (no more than 15 students), helping us close achievement gaps and build strong academic foundations. 💬 This summer, we’re placing a strong focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) through structured lessons, reflection activities, and our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system that rewards attendance, positive behavior, and academic engagement. 👩🏫 Middle school participants are receiving stipends and engaging in creative enrichment activities designed to foster leadership, collaboration, and confidence. 🩺 We’re thrilled to be a selected site for Career Ready DC Summer Program! Twenty of our middle school students are participating in a healthcare-focused internship track with hands-on career exploration. 🎓 Our rising 9th graders are participating in a high school transition program covering everything from goal-setting and time management to mentorship and college and career exploration. We are so proud of our students’ progress this summer! #HortonsKids #SummerFest2025 #StudentSuccess #DCYouth #SummerLearning #CareerReadyDC #SocialEmotionalLearning #EducationMatters #NonprofitImpact
