What makes a product impossible to ignore? Hear Kamran Ali, Partner at Inspired Capital, on how we think about investing and what led him to ShopMy.
Kamran Ali (Partner at Inspired Capital) is one of my favorite NYC VCs! I recently spoke to him about why he led ShopMy’s Series A, and his investment lens is pretty simple: 👉 Is this product a step-function improvement over the status quo? Most startups fail because they underestimate human inertia. If a product needs heavy explanation or incentives, habit usually wins. Kamran looks for products so superior that not switching feels irrational. That’s what he saw with ShopMy. Long before the data, there was organic pull, dermatologists were already using it without prompting. Over time, that early signal became a flywheel: creators pulled in brands, brands pulled in creators, and friction disappeared. The founder takeaway: know your secret. Step-function companies are built on a proprietary insight about why the old way is broken and when founders truly have it, their clarity is impossible to fake.
