  • A look back at one of the most emotional ribbon-cuttings we’ve had the honor to support. Toss & Sauce is a family-owned, build-your-own organic pizza concept unlike anything else in Detroit. Ashley Patton came home with a promise to herself and a dream she refused to let go of. Through construction delays, contractor challenges, and five years of perfecting the dough, she and her aunt, Cher, never stopped pushing. As Jason Barnett, Senior Vice President, Lending, shared during the ribbon cutting, Ashley went from being single with no children to being married with two during the process. Proof of the faith, determination, and resilience it took to bring this vision to life. Located at 18673 Livernois, Toss and Sauce serves custom pizzas made with organic, non-GMO ingredients. Their menu pays tribute to Detroit roots and family stories with creations like the “Mel Street,” honoring Ashley’s late cousin; the “Yo Peezy,” featuring smoked salmon and capers; and the “What Up Dough,” a flavorful nod to Detroit culture. Every sauce and every batch of dough is made in-house. Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, Motor City Contractor Fund, Kevin Johnson, City of Detroit, Melia Howard

Maurice spoke openly about the benefits and importance of having a network that understands the work it takes to be successful and impactful. His story reflects the discipline, heart, and dedication that define so many Detroit entrepreneurs. As Patti Glaza shared on Michigan Matters, Michigan’s progress in supporting early-stage founders has been decades in the making. But sustaining that momentum requires long-term investment, both in founders and in the venture firms that back them. “It’s not a one-and-done. It’s a 30- to 40-year effort. Ensuring that capital and returns stay in Michigan is essential to growing a cycle of reinvestment that benefits our founders, investors, and communities alike." Last week’s Motor City Contractor Fund Network Connection Event at the Union Carpenters and Millwrights Skilled Training Center was one for the books. More than 120 Detroit contractors, 16 job providers, and 20+ resource partners came together for a day built around one thing: helping Detroit builders grow, connect, and win. From speed coaching and lending appointments to hands-on business support, the room was full of real conversations, real opportunities, and real momentum. We’re proud to create spaces where emerging contractors can tap into resources, sharpen their skills, and build the relationships that move their businesses forward. As we close out National Women’s Small Business Month, we’re spotlighting one of our alumnae, Kimberly Redd. Kimberly Redd, founder of KMR Construction Services, sat down with Lauren Sanders on the Flux City's YouTube channel to share her journey as a Detroit-based contractor and what twenty years in the industry have taught her about perseverance, purpose, and pride. Founded in 2005, KMR Construction Services is 100% woman-owned and specializes in electrical work and construction management. Kimberly’s path to entrepreneurship started long before her company did. She grew up shadowing her father, a master electrician, yet initially took a different route, earning a degree in economics and finance and working as a stockbroker. “One day,” she recalls, “I went to work and said, ‘I quit. I hate this job.’” That moment of clarity led her back to her roots and the start of a thriving construction career. Today, she uses her voice to inspire more women to explore the many paths available in construction. Through programs like the Motor City Contractor Fund, she found not only capital and technical support, but also a network of peers and mentors that continue to shape her business’s success.
