We make a difference.

About us

KL&A Inc, Engineers and Builders is a unique firm built around the fundamental idea that structural engineers can and should return to a master builder role, taking ownership not only of design of structural systems, but also cost estimating and at-risk construction. We took the first step by building, alongside our staff of structural engineers, an in-house staff of steel detailers. Using 3D modeling software developed for steel fabricators, we found ourselves on the cutting edge of construction-grade BIM modeling before the term “BIM” existed. We have since built a company with bonding capability, and a track record of successful construction projects in which the same design engineering team carries the project through estimating, detailing, fabrication and erection of structural steel. There is no faster or more reliable process for steel construction than our integrated approach. Our philosophy of personal responsibility has generated a corporate atmosphere of problem solving that embraces scopes of work that other structural engineers might be unable to serve. At the same time, our approach to steel design and construction has informed and energized our work in many other areas, including reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, heavy timber, multi-story stick frame, and masonry design, as well as emerging materials such as rammed earth, structural insulating panels, and structural glass. High design architects have responded with enthusiasm to our creative spirit, backed by engineering fundamentals and virtual building tools, as have designers of industrial structures and all manner of building types, urban and mountain, low or high budget. Founded in 1994, KL&A is the second largest structural firm in Colorado, with four offices in Colorado and Wyoming. We have been voted one of the top structural engineering firms to work for in the U.S. since 2006.

Colorado woke up in full winter mode yesterday, and we’re not mad about it. With a fresh blanket on the peaks, it’s officially “drop everything and find your edge” season. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’ll be admiring our handiwork at 10,000 feet—between runs.

Three members of the KL&A team — Greg Reindl, Michael Olsen, and Keegan Snow AIA DBIA — recently visited SmartLam North America™'s mass timber facility in Dothan, Alabama. SmartLam is producing the Southern Yellow Pine CLT and glulam for several KL&A projects, including the Aims Workforce Innovation Center, which is structurally engineered by KL&A. Our team is also managing the mass timber construction for the project. The visit included a tour of SmartLam’s 225,000 sf. facility, offering a close look at the production and quality processes behind the materials that will soon be on-site. Seeing the full operation firsthand deepened our understanding of SmartLam’s approach and strengthened our collaboration as the project moves forward. This trip reflects KL&A’s commitment to knowledgeable material sourcing, strong industry partnerships, and the advancement of innovative mass timber design and construction.

We are pleased to share that EMIT has received an Honorable Mention in the Architectural Record Design Awards. This recognition adds to a growing list of accolades for the project. Originally a concrete Kmart, the campus was re-envisioned into a state-of-the-art fabrication facility. The 120,000 sf adaptive-reuse campus consolidates four former metal-fabrication sites into one cohesive environment, wrapped in a distinctive perforated weathered-steel scrim that reflects both craft and regional character. Congratulations to CLB Architects, the EMIT Technologies, Inc. team, Axe Build, and everyone at KL&A who contributed to bringing this transformative project to life.

Our technical staff aren’t the only ones attending conferences lately. Last week, our accounting team headed to Deltek ProjectCon to learn about new tools and updates that can streamline financial reporting, improve project visibility and support a faster month-end close. They returned with practical ideas and refreshed insights that we’re excited to put to work here at KL&A!

Over the past several weeks, KL&A has had the opportunity to participate in meaningful industry events that reinforced the strength of our professional community and the importance of collaboration. At Greenbuild, Robbie Camann shared KL&A’s perspective on the future of sustainable structural solutions, sparking thoughtful discussions with practitioners who are driving innovation across the built environment. Our team also attended AIA Colorado, where we connected with architects and industry partners who are shaping design in our region through creative, people-centered work. Zac Brownson also represented KL&A with Alexis Feitel at the Circular Steel Conference, contributing to conversations around material reuse, circularity, and the evolving role engineers can play in reducing environmental impact. Across these events, one theme remained constant: the power of strong relationships. We are grateful for the new connections we made, the familiar faces we were able to reconnect with, and the inspiring conversations that continue to push our industry forward. KL&A looks forward to building on this momentum as we collaborate toward a more resilient, sustainable future.

KL&A is honored to have receives an Excellence Award from ACEC Colorado for the Aiken Audubon Research Outpost. Located within the cottonwood and willow bosque of Chico Basin Ranch in southeastern Colorado, this approximately 1,000-square-foot outpost supports migratory bird research, educational programming, and ecological stewardship at a refuge that hosts more than 330 bird species. The project stands out as the first commercial structure in the United States to use cross-laminated timber panels fabricated entirely from Colorado-sourced wood, demonstrating the potential of truly local mass-timber construction. Designed and built by University of Colorado Denver students, with KL&A as the structural engineering consultant, the outpost embodies hands-on learning, innovative thinking, and an environmentally responsible approach to building. Congratulations to all of this year’s ACEC Colorado Engineering Excellence Award winners.
