The semiconductor industry is approaching the physical limits of classical computing power. What comes next? At Mitsubishi Chemical Group, we see quantum computing as a transformative partner in materials discovery, electronics design, and advanced manufacturing. Since 2018, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and MUFG Bank have joined forces with IBM and Keio University through initiatives like the IBM Q Network and Q-STAR, exploring how quantum computing can move from theory to industry impact. The roadmap ahead is twofold: 🔹 Today – Use NISQ-era systems (Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum) for specialized calculations that are already creating value. 🔹 Tomorrow – Prepare for Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computers (FTQC), targeted for industrial viability by 2035, which promise to revolutionize simulations, optimization, and materials science. For semiconductors and electronics, the implications are enormous: ✅Accelerating quantum chemical calculations for new materials, OLEDs, and batteries. ✅Pairing quantum computing with generative AI to fast-track discovery. ✅Overcoming the computational limits of supercomputers for complex simulations. But no single company can advance this future alone. Collaboration between industry, academia, and government will be essential to create quantum-ready ecosystems. Japan’s national ambition—to bring quantum computing to 10 million users by 2030 through cloud access—underscores how democratized this technology could become. The question for our industry is no longer if quantum computing will matter, but how fast we can get ready. At MCG, we’re committed to leading at the intersection of materials innovation and next-generation computing—and we invite our peers and partners to join us in shaping this future. #QuantumComputing #Semiconductors #Innovation #MaterialsScience #MCG
