MKSK, Atlanta | Studio Works MKSK is leading the Smyrna Downtown Master Plan with imagination and collaboration, bringing fresh energy to the heart of one of Cobb County, Georgia’s most dynamic communities. In partnership with Urban Partners and C2G, they have studied existing conditions, examined parking and mobility, and crafted market strategies to ensure the vision for Smyrna is both ambitious and feasible. Their process has introduced big ideas such as the “Jonquil Mile,” a signature pedestrian-friendly corridor that connects key destinations, while interactive tools like “build your own downtown” have given residents a direct role in shaping what downtown Smyrna can become. At its core, the project reimagines downtown Smyrna around the nine-acre First Baptist Church site, a once-in-a-generation redevelopment opportunity. This site will be transformed into a vibrant extension of downtown with a mix of shops, restaurants, public spaces, and new housing. The broader effort aimed at creating a downtown area that’s safe to walk, easy to navigate, and enjoyable for neighbors and visitors alike. To date, thousands of residents have helped shape this process through surveys, open houses, workshops, and festivals. Their input has culminated in six guiding goals for Downtown Smyrna: ·      Expand the walkable core ·      Enhance fiscal health ·      Attract new businesses and activity ·      Create great public spaces ·      Preserve small-town charm ·      Connect downtown with surrounding neighborhoods The MKSK team will be working with the community through the remainder of 2025 to finalize this exciting vision for the future of Downtown Smyrna.   #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanDesign #Planning #Studio #Atlanta #Design #Smyrna #MasterPlan  #APA #ULI #WLA

MKSK, Cleveland | Studio Works After acquiring Geauga Lake and approximately 38 acres of land previously used by SeaWorld Ohio and the Wildwater Kingdom amusement park, the City of Aurora is taking this rare, once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine and transform the area into a regional park destination and a beloved landmark for Aurora residents and nearby communities. MKSK, along with its partners at Strand, DLR Group, and PROS Consulting, has been spearheading the effort to create a long-term vision that will once again make the park an iconic spot for recreation, relaxation, and a touch of nostalgia.   The Aurora Park Vision Plan is designed to balance active recreation with quiet, natural experiences while celebrating the site’s rich history and unique setting on Geauga Lake. A central vision of the plan is to embrace the 1,700 feet of shoreline with new opportunities for access and enjoyment, including docks, boardwalks, overlooks, and a possible swimming beach. The site features programmed spaces for events and recreation while incorporating educational features about ecology and watersheds. At the heart of the park, a new pool and bathhouse complex overlooks Geauga Lake, offering sun decks, splash zones, and shaded seating. MKSK, Cleveland | Studio Works Bedrock’s Cuyahoga Riverfront Master Development Plan will transform 35 acres of underused waterfront, including the historic Tower City Center, into a vibrant mixed-use district and entertainment hub. Spanning 3.5 million square feet, the project includes 12 acres of parks, plazas, trails, and a 3,000-foot riverwalk with year-round amenities. As a key part of Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb’s Shore-to-Core-to-Shore initiative, the plan will develop over the next 15–20 years, with infrastructure work already underway since 2023. One of the first major milestones is the Global Peak Performance Center, a partnership between the Cleveland Cavaliers, Bedrock, and the Cleveland Clinic. In addition to this state-of-the-art facility, the first phase of Riverwalk and public space improvements will enhance riverfront access with engaging outdoor activities, more green space, and new recreational options. MKSK has played a crucial role in shaping the plan, securing approvals, and serving as the lead landscape architect for the Riverwalk and public realm, ensuring Cleveland’s riverfront transformation meets global standards in urban planning, sustainability, and community engagement. With infrastructure being built and major projects beginning, the Cuyahoga Riverfront is poised to enter a new phase—one that redefines Cleveland’s connection to its waterways and enhances its reputation as a leader in modern, sustainable urban development.   Partners: Bedrock Detroit/Cleveland City of Cleveland - City Hall Adjaye Associates Populous Osborn Engineering #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanDesign #Planning #Studio #Cleveland #Design #Cuyahoga #Riverfront #MasterPlan #APA #ULI #WLA

This summer, the MKSK Internship Program brought together emerging talent in landscape architecture and planning from across our 12 studios for a two-month immersive design experience. Our teams of interns collaborated virtually to develop innovative redevelopment plans for two riverfront communities where MKSK has ongoing work: Portsmouth, OH and Bowling Green, KY. The Portsmouth team focused on strategies to improve streetscapes and enhance connectivity throughout the city. Their work emphasized walkability, pedestrian experiences, and linkages between neighborhoods and the riverfront. Through a mix of detailed graphic plans, hand-drawn sketches, and conceptual renderings, they illustrated how thoughtful design can better integrate the community with the city of Portsmouth and the waterfront. The Bowling Green team centered their work around recommendations for community engagement and education around potential sustainable energy solutions, restoration of native ecosystems, and managing flooding in the area. Their vision aimed to strengthen the area’s environmental resilience by introducing green infrastructure, habitat restoration strategies, and educational elements that bring awareness to ecological systems and energy use. The 2025 Summer interns connected virtually to discuss ideas, share progress, and support one another’s creative process. The two projects were presented firm-wide, giving everyone at MKSK the opportunity to celebrate and learn from the interns’ work. The result was two comprehensive study documents with recommendations that can help these communities connect more deeply with their natural landscapes. We’re incredibly proud of the work these teams produced and the energy they brought to our studios this summer. #MKSK #ShapePlace #PlacesforPeople #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanDesign #Planning #Design #MKSKInterns #2025Interns #UrbanPlanning #DesignForCommunity #RiverfrontRevitalization #PortsmouthKY #BowlingGreenKY #MKSKStudios #FutureDesigners
