“Be reliable. Show up. Be read in.” That was just one of many powerful takeaways from our summer intern Meet & Greet with award-winning journalist Tom Llamas, Anchor at NBC Nightly News and Top Story. Tom joined us at Telemundo Center to speak directly with our interns—sharing hard-earned wisdom from his career journey, answering questions, and encouraging the next generation of media professionals to stay ready, stay curious, and never give up. Long before anchoring national broadcasts, Tom got his own start as an intern at Telemundo 51 in Miami—a full-circle moment that made this conversation even more impactful. Here were a few standout lessons: ♦️ Be persistent—and patient. When Tom was starting out, he pitched himself as a network correspondent for years before getting a “yes.” “They told me I wasn’t ready,” he said. “But I kept raising my hand... A lot of this business is about timing. So make sure you're ready when your moment comes.” ♦️ Build relationships that matter. “You want to be one call away —that’s how you know you’re really connected,” he told interns, stressing the value of trusted sources and professional networks, whether in local or national news. ♦️ Treat every internship like a job interview. “An internship and a college education have the same goal: to get a job,” he said. “If they depend on you, be dependable. Show up. Be read in.” ♦️ Do your homework—on cities, stories, and people. Whether you’re moving to a new market or covering a new community, he emphasized the power of local knowledge: “Know the history. Know the neighborhoods. Know the news— in English and Spanish.” Tom’s transparency, hustle, and heart left a lasting impression on our team—and our interns walked away inspired to keep pushing forward.
