The Nomad Futurist Foundation recently had the privilege of bringing a group of passionate Oregon educators on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Flexential’s Portland Data Center 3. From CTE and science teachers to K-12 program leaders, attendees experienced the inner workings of a data center firsthand, exploring server racks, advanced infrastructure, and the technology shaping our digital future. With insights shared by Foundation Advocate Hannah Harrer and Partner Jake Curtachio of iMiller Public Relations (iMPR), educators left inspired with new knowledge to bring directly into their classrooms, sparking curiosity and empowering students with real-world applications. In a time when digital infrastructure faces talent shortages across nearly every function, it was inspiring to see Albert Odum and Tosin Fashola, MBA candidates at University of Virginia Darden School of Business, step forward at the #DCFTrends event this week in Reston (VA). Albert’s reflections (below) highlight the level of insight and seriousness that today’s employers are looking for. Students across Virginia—undergraduate and graduate alike—should be looking seriously at careers in digital infrastructure. The opportunities for upward mobility are strong, analysts remain bullish on the category's long-term growth, and the projects are not only exciting, but often transformational. And where better than #Virginia? Virginia is home to the world's largest concentration of data centers, and sits at the heart of the global digital economy. Attending school in Virginia and not tapping into the data center boom is like graduating from a Bay Area university in the 90s and ignoring the chance to join Google or Facebook—an opportunity too big to miss. The explosion of AI workloads has put unprecedented upward pressure on digital infrastructure, throwing the data center industry into an "absolute arms race", as players scramble to scale capacity and future-proof digital infrastructure investments. As Flexential CEO Chris Downie noted in his opening, the old playbook is gone. Data center professionals are pouring intellectual and financial capital into answering a new set of existential questions, ranging from "How do we secure sufficient, reliable, and cost-effective power?" to "How do we meet today’s latency needs for AI inference while designing for the next decade?". This week, I was privileged to be part of the conversation, as over 500 data center professionals gathered in the heart of the Data Center Alley to unpack the critical questions keeping everyone in the industry up at night. So much to unpack here, but my top 3 takeaways from the DCF Trends Summit were: 1. Partnership is crucial: The most important partnerships are no longer just transactional- they are strategic. This is particularly true for the relationship between operators and utilities, as well as between operators and local communities. 2. The future is hybrid: With power demand in Tier 1 markets like Northern Virginia outpacing the utility's ability to provide new generation and transmission infrastructure, the traditional model of building a data center and waiting for a large-scale power plant to be built or a utility line to be upgraded is no longer viable. The industry is quickly shifting to on-site, "behind the meter" power generation using natural gas not just as a bridge solution but as an integral part of the future energy solution. 3. The future is modular: Both data center design and power solution design have shifted toward modularity. Instead of massive, up-front builds, developers are deploying small, standardized blocks of power (e.g., 1-5 MW) and data hall capacity. This approach shrinks the development and delivery time, allows for phased build-outs, and ensures facilities can remain flexible to the ever-accelerating pace of change in the industry. The biggest highlight was the privilege of being hosted on the Data Center Frontier podcast where Tosin Fashola and I brought fresh perspectives on AI infrastructure through a global lens, discussing regional power strategies, and the role of connectivity in economic transformation, with a focus on Africa. I am grateful for the incredible connections made and the opportunity to contribute to these vital conversations shaping the industry's future.
