ON THIS DAY | Ten years ago today, the Osage Nation entered into a compact with the Indian Health Service (IHS) to take control of the Pawhuska clinic. Tribes were granted the right to compact federal services following the passage of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Act of 1975. In 2000, the IHS Self-Governance Act was passed. The Osage Nation Congress unanimously passed a resolution on September 23, 2014 (ONCR 14-15), formally requesting participation in the IHS Tribal Self-Governance Program. The compact between the Osage Nation and the United States of America was signed by Osage Nation Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear on July 24, 2015, and by the Director of IHS on September 28, 2015. Quoted in the Osage News on the day the Fourth Osage Nation Congress passed the legislation to enter into the compact, Congressman Ron Shaw said this: “It is no longer what IHS says goes. What they decide we have to live with. We are the decision makers now. After today, it will be the Osage Nation’s decision – we will truly be in control of our health destiny here on the reservation.” Photographed here is the Osage Nation Health System, which opened its doors on July 15, 2025. #selfgovernance #waybackwahzhazhe #WahzhazheAlways #sovereignty
