  • You probably wouldn't leave your child's bedroom window wide open or your doors unlocked and risk letting in someone with bad intent. So why would you leave them open to malicious actions in their digital world? Kids spend hours every day on their devices, using social media, playing games, and possibly chatting with AI bots. That opens them up to all kinds of trouble including bullying, harassment, and exploitation. To help protect Pinellas County kids, the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County has partnered with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, other local law enforcement agencies, and Pinellas County Schools to bring families a FREE subscription to Parent ProTech. What is Parent ProTech? Parent ProTech helps parents and caregivers navigate the world of technology with: - Content and resources about keeping kids safe online - Videos on topics like AI chatbots, online predators, and social media platforms - Information on parental controls and the latest trends - A K-12 curriculum for educators This subscription normally costs $4.99 a month, but through this partnership, it's completely FREE for Pinellas County families. • How Tablets Are Making Our Jail Safer Every inmate booked into the Pinellas County Jail is assigned a tablet and headphones. This tablet allows them access to their mail, to make phone calls, video visitation, messages, law library, religious services, books, and more. In September we implemented fully remote visitation where inmates could meet with their family and friends through an online portal on their tablet. Prior to this, visitors had to schedule within limited time slots and physically drive to a facility to talk to inmates through a device while inmates also had to be transported to a visitation station within the jail. (In-person visitation has not been available at the Pinellas County Jail for decades.) Due to the ease of this new video visitation system, inmates virtually have no limit to the number of visits they can have with family and friends. Allowing inmates to stay connected to the outside world helps to reduce recidivism. The implementation of these tablets was intended to make the jail safer for deputies and inmates alike, and it has. Violent incidents in the jail are down since tablets were introduced. Having visitation and mail services on tablets allows for less physical movement of inmates from place to place and does not allow contraband to enter through physical mail, as that is all sent to a separate location and scanned for the inmate to read on their tablet. Also, with each inmate having their own tablet, there is no struggle between inmates over using the phone since they each have one. Inmates can also privately report concerns to staff through their tablets, creating a safer environment for everyone. And no, inmates aren't streaming Netflix. They don't have access to games or streaming services. Read the full story in Inside the Star. [link in comments]

  • NEW EPISODE ALERT! Our latest 56 Podcast guest has been ambushed with a Tommy gun, stabbed under his vest, and shot at so many times he says he shouldn't be here to tell these stories. But Corporal Jim Lancia is here, and these stories are wild. After years as a law enforcement officer in Pennsylvania, plus a stint training K-9s for Navy SEALs, he came to PCSO. While here he spent some time working the beaches and in the Marine Unit for a welcome change from the snow and slush. Now he's in our Training Division, keeping us on the forefront of the most innovative technology, including the use of Virtual Reality. Hear why getting stabbed "wasn't even a big deal" compared to everything else, what it's like working with a Belgian Malinois, and why luck isn't a tactic but it's a very real thing in police work. 🎙️ The latest episode of 56: A Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Podcast is available now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever you listen.
