This week, we joined members of Protect American River Canyons and the Auburn community to celebrate the successful completion of the American River Debris Removal Project. The complex project removed 450 tons of steel and more than 600 cubic yards of concrete left behind after the 1964 flood that washed out the old state Route 49 bridge. For decades, the debris posed a hazard beneath the river’s surface, marked by a warning sign that was finally removed during Monday’s event. Thanks to strong community advocacy and $8 million in state funding secured in 2023, the river corridor has been restored, making it safer for visitors and wildlife alike. The celebration also marked the official reopening of the Calcutta Falls Trailhead on Route 49 leading to No Hands Bridge. This project is a great example of local, state and community partners working together to protect public safety and our natural resources. Every grain tells a story. Made possible through a strong partnership between Placer County and local community organizations, today's Red Sand Project event organized by our Children's System of Care brought dozens of participants together to pour red sand into sidewalk cracks—honoring the children and families whose lives are impacted by human trafficking. The red sand is a powerful reminder not to let anyone “slip through the cracks,” and to keep our community vigilant and informed. Some staff at our County Administrative Center in Auburn also joined in the effort today — and you can too! You’re invited to pick up bags of red sand for free throughout January (Human Trafficking Prevention Month): 🔴Children's System of Care Auburn - 11434 B Ave. 🔴Children's System of Care Rocklin - 1000 Sunset Blvd. Placer County Probation Department Placer County Office Of Education
