    What began as numbness quickly turned into a more serious matter when Don Witzel collapsed and couldn’t feel his legs. Further tests revealed Don had Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), a rare autoimmune disorder that can cause paralysis. Once stabilized, Don and his family chose California Rehabilitation Institute for the next level of recovery. At Cal Rehab, a physician-led team of therapists and nurses propelled Don throughout his recovery. Through hard work and determination during physical and occupational therapy, Don regained his strength and independence. Now able to walk using a cane in each hand, Don continues to improve at home.
