On August 29, the U.S. will end the $800 de minimis exemption, a policy that has long allowed low-value shipments to enter duty-free. For e-commerce brands, marketplaces, and platforms, this change is significant: 1) DDU (delivered duty unpaid) will no longer be an option 2) Every shipment into the U.S. will require duties and taxes to be prepaid (via DDP or what we at Shippo call "Pre-Entry DDU") 3) Some postal operators have already suspended U.S. shipments in response What does this mean in practice? More cost, more complexity, and a need for sellers to adapt quickly so they don’t risk returns, delays, or frustrated customers. Getting ready for peak season shipping? Ask yourself this question. It will tell you if one of the most basic parts of your process can actually handle the volume spike: "What happens when customers enter bad shipping addresses during your busiest shipping days?" If your answer is "we'll figure it out" or "our team will catch those manually,” that's a red flag.
