Based in Rhode Island, Sojourner House is an advocacy and resource center for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. Our agency is a leader in providing a comprehensive network of support services which include residential programs, child counseling, sexual health advocacy and education, and more. Since 1976 we have provided a safe haven for victims and families to reclaim their lives.
We're throwing it back to our very first Masquerade Ball in 2011! It's amazing to see how far we've come in 15 years. When Sojourner House first hosted this event we had 12 staff members and today we have more than 70!
This growth— which was made possible in large part through fundraising events like the Masquerade— has allowed us to expand our programs, extend our reach, and support more Rhode Islanders during in times of crisis.
Our 15th and FINAL Masquerade Ball is on Friday, November 21st, so if you're looking for a way to get involved and support the future of our agency this is the perfect opportunity.

I’m inviting my community to join me at Sojourner House’s final Masquerade Ball on Friday, Nov 21. After 15 years (!), we’re retiring this beloved tradition, and I’d love to see you there as we send it off in style. ✨
In this moment, coming together feels more important than ever. Your ticket helps us raise flexible, unrestricted funds so survivors can access housing, safety, and support—when and how they need it.

If you can’t attend, making a donation + sharing this post is a huge help. 💜
For the past fourteen years, Sojourner House has hosted an extravagant Masquerade Ball in Providence. This lavish event has allowed us to raise considerable funds to support our statewide victim advocacy and violence prevention work— and also to have some really beautiful moments of connection with our community!
If you've attended any of these galas, you know that our team goes all out. We have live music in every room, specialty performances, delicious hors d'oeuvres, and a themed cake competition with local bakers participating. Last year we even had an interactive art exhibit outside the ballroom!
This outrageous event has truly allowed us to put the fun in fundraising 🎉
But this fall, that era of our organizations history is coming to a close. Our 15th and FINAL Masquerade Ball will been Friday, November 21st at the Graduate By Hilton Providence. You won't want to miss it!
For the grand finale of this historic event, we're traveling back in time to Renaissance Italy, the birthplace of the Masquerade Ball.
The theme is... Venetian Twilight!

Thank you to Kate Wilkinson and WPRI-TV for having our team on to talk about the importance of violence prevention education.
In the wake of Kylee Monteiro's death, many people have been reaching out to us with the same question, 'How can we prevent further tragedies like this from occurring?"
At Sojourner House, we see comprehensive relationship education as a powerful tool to create change and prevent future violence. That's why we have an education team. These educators work in schools across the state to help young people understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships. They talk with students about conflict resolution, online safety, handling rejection, and make them aware of resources that are available to them should they ever need help.

Domestic violence is still a big issue that women, men, and children face around the world. We must destigmatize it, we must look to those who face this terrible situation with love, compassion, and empathy. We must hold space for them to come to us, even when it's hard, even if they choose to stay. Because maybe one day they won't, and maybe you'll be the call that gets them away.
Thoughts and prayers are wonderful, but it's not enough. We must take the appropriate action in teaching our children what love and healthy relationships look like. It starts at home. We must teach our students what love and healthy relationships looks like; it travels with them outside of the home. We must reinforce healthy relationships in doctors offices, churches, and other places people go to seek refuge.
So sad to see this happen. We have to figure this out.
We at Sojourner House are heartbroken by the tragic death of Kylee Monteiro. Our thoughts are with her siblings and all those who loved her. They are undoubtedly struggling to process this senseless violence and the bright future they imagined for Kylee.
Kylee’s story is a painful reminder of the devastating impact that domestic violence has on the lives of young people in our community. For the advocates in our Transitional Aged Youth Program– a program that provides victims of abuse between the ages of 18 to 24 with access to crisis housing, rapid-rehousing, and specialized care– her loss serves as a reminder that the work they do is vital, urgent, and life-saving.
In Sojourner House’s most recent fiscal year (7/1/24-6/30/25), 60% of the clients in our shelter and housing programs were under the age of 24. 14% of those clients were transitional aged youth, just like Kylee.
Most of the time, these young people seek us out because they lack the resources and financial stability needed to break free from abuse on their own.
In the midst of our grief, we're trying to find strength in the continuation of this work and in our collective commitment to ending violence and creating safer, healthier communities for everyone. We encourage anyone feeling unsafe at home or in their relationship to reach out for support.
Our 24/7 helpline is 401-765-3232.
Sojourner House's President and CEO, Vanessa Volz, spoke with Mike Cerullo from NBC 10 WJAR Providence New Bedford last night about the devastating impact that domestic violence has on the lives of young people in our community.
When asked how common it is for Sojourner House to get calls from people in the 18-24 age range, Vanessa said, "We get calls every day from people who are in situations like Kylee's. They need housing, they need shelter, and they need support. I don't think it's an understatement to say this is a public health epidemic."
