This week marks a new phase in the Palisades, Malibu Fire Restoration Project. As part of our continued effort to reduce downtime, cut diesel use, limit fuel deliveries, lower emissions, and improve temporary power systems, Southern California Edison is integrating battery storage (MBESS units) across most generators supporting Malibu residents during this historic recovery. With these enhancements, homes will primarily draw power from battery storage. Generators will run only as needed, typically once or twice per week, to recharge the batteries. This dramatically reduces runtime, fuel usage, and emissions. Most importantly, these batteries reduce power interruptions during generator servicing. While brief outages were manageable at first, they’ve become increasingly disruptive. Now, batteries will keep homes powered even during maintenance, ensuring continuous, reliable electricity and peace of mind. This also means fewer fuel trucks in the area, easing strain on neighborhoods already overwhelmed by fire recovery traffic. For residents like Craig, Ann, and many others, this shift brings real relief, supporting a cleaner, quieter, more stable community. SCE is moving at an extraordinary pace to restore permanent power. In a short time, these temporary systems will no longer be needed. But the technology we’ve deployed here will serve as a blueprint for future emergency power solutions, bringing resilience to the next community affected by a man-made disaster. Looking ahead, we’re close to deploying a system that won’t require a generator at all. Powered solely by residential solar, it would eliminate the need for diesel backup entirely.
