A re-occurring, persistent issue for tea workers lies in being unable to access their rightful government entitlements. Our policy review in 2023 highlighted the disparity between the government social protection schemes available, and the number of tea workers - especially women - who were able to use them. The barriers are complex and deeply systemic, ranging from inadequate documentation and poor connectivity to limited digital literacy and awareness. Through the Udayini - Women in Leadership programme, ETP has responded by developing a first-of-its-kind digital application designed to make social protection accessible, practical, and empowering. This not only unlocks the benefits afforded by government schemes, it also builds crucial digital confidence: for many women in Dirial and Dirok (the two areas where the programme is currently being piloted in Assam, India), this is their first experience using a mobile for something beyond calls or entertainment. Unnatea empowers self reliance, autonomy and a levelling of the playing field. It is transformational in shifting the power balance, helping women workers and female adolescents become active agents of change through a deep understanding of what's needed to clear the path towards financial ownership and digital inclusion.
