  • What if the biggest challenge in access to critical metals isn't finding more or optimizing recycling, but re-thinking the fundamental physics of extraction? At Thunderstone, we figured out that powering the global energy (renewables, medical devices, digital electronics) requires a 5x increase in metal extraction rate. Current practices aren’t equipped to enable this. Traditional mining to extract critical metals is an energy-intensive process, with most of the cost and energy going into moving rock without value. At Thunderstone we're asking the ultimate question: what if we could decouple the metal from the rock by engineering an in-situ process? Our solution is "underground lightning", where we use high-voltage electricity to directly stimulate the ore body. We are replacing brute force with precision for a cleaner, cheaper and faster metal supply. See an outtake of our process below!

    Say hi to our two newest hires! 👇 We welcome Ash Abusafieh, as our Mechanical Technician and Andrew Alexander, as our High Voltage Electrical Engineer. Both have worked in fast-paced startup environments: Andrew in several pulsed power fusion companies and Ash in several automotive companies + previously owner of his own tool shop! 🌟Naturally, we asked them what they’re most excited about when joining Thunderstone and where can we find them on a Sunday morning, here’s what they said: Andrew: “I really like rapid hands-on high voltage work and working with a very humane team. Honestly. On Sunday morning you'll find me fixing breakfast while motorcycle camping.” Ash: “I like joining the founding team and solving something that has a real immediate impact on the environment.     Today, we’re proud to announce Cohort 5 of Breakthrough Energy Fellows—45 innovators across 22 companies working at the edge of science and engineering to solve climate challenges. The Fellows program exists to fill one of the hardest gaps in climate innovation: helping breakthrough ideas progress before they’re “venture-ready.” Our model combines catalytic funding, hands-on technical guidance, and world-class mentorship to help innovators move from the lab bench toward real-world application. Impact to date (program-wide): ◾ $475M+ in follow-on capital raised by Fellows alumni ◾ 175 patents filed and issued ◾ 81 pilots and demos completed ◾ 221 industry partnerships formed What’s new in Cohort 5: ◾ Companies span all five of BE’s Grand Challenges: electricity, transportation, buildings, manufacturing, and agriculture. ◾ Almost 30% of the cohort is focused on electricity/grid modernization (e.g., transmission, storage, power electronics, renewables). ◾ It’s our most global class yet with ~50% of teams based outside the U.S., including our first Fellows from Japan, Malaysia, and South Africa. This milestone marks the fifth year of the Fellows program. It’s a model that’s proven what’s possible when catalytic support is applied early, deeply, and strategically.
