The Trust for Governors Island is the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created by the City of New York responsible for the planning, operations and ongoing development of Governors Island.
The Trust’s mission is to realize the full potential of Governors Island for the inspiration and enjoyment of all New Yorkers, demonstrating a bold vision for public space.
🚢 We’re helping New York sail into a cleaner future.
The new Governors Island ferry is now in service, and we’re proud to have played a role in making it more sustainable. With a hybrid propulsion system and smart energy management, the vessel can switch between battery power and diesel backup, cutting emissions by nearly 600 tons of CO₂ every year. And once shoreside charging is ready, that number could grow by another 800 tons.

⛴️⚡️ Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday to christen the Harbor Charger—the newest addition to our ferry fleet and a major step toward a more sustainable future for both Governors Island and New York City.
We were proud to celebrate this maritime milestone alongside Deputy Mayor Adolfo Carrión, Representative Dan Goldman, Council Member Chris Marte, Senator Brian Kavanagh, the National Park Service, Conrad Shipyard, Elliott Bay Design Group, Siemens Energy, NY Waterway, and so many members of the Governors Island tenant and partner community. Your next trip to Governors Island just got a whole lot greener: the Trust for Governors Island today unveiled its new hybrid-electric ferry, the Harbor Charger—the first of its kind in New York State and a welcome addition to our fleet. Originally announced in 2023, the Harbor Charger’s arrival coincides with the 20-year anniversary of Governors Island opening to the public, as well as major recent progress in its development as a leading destination for climate research and education.
The new ferry will cruise into service beginning tomorrow, August 13, and was named following a citywide naming competition that drew more than 800 submissions. Congratulations to David Kurnov of Brooklyn, NY, for submitting the winning name!
It will replace the diesel-powered Lt. Samuel S. Coursen, which was commissioned by the U.S. Army in 1956 and has been in continuous use ever since. Later this year, the Lt. Samuel S. Coursen will retire from service.

Governors Island has grown tremendously as a resource for all New Yorkers over the past two decades—from climate-resilient open space to groundbreaking public artworks and even New York City's longest slide, innovation is in our DNA.
As we celebrate the Island's 20th year open to the public, we're proud of the vibrant community we're creating that's committed to accelerating climate solutions for cities. With more than 20 climate tech pilot projects currently underway, a growing ecosystem of climate-focused tenants and partners, and the first of its kind The New York Climate Exchange opening in 2029, Governors Island is home to the innovators leading the charge in a more sustainable, equitable future.

Last Friday, we were thrilled to welcome a group of volunteers from the NYC Mayor's Office for International Affairs and the United Nations for several impactful projects across the Island in honor of #MandelaDay2025! They spent the day working on key horticultural and landscaping projects, helping us keep our 120 acres of open space welcoming and beautiful for Island visitors.
Mandela Day is an annual global celebration that takes place on July 18 to honor the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. This day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organizations to take time to reflect on Mandela's values and principles and to make a positive impact in their own communities.

Celebrate 20 remarkable years with us at the Governors Island Gala this November!
This year, we're honoring three incredible Island champions that have been integral in its transformation from former military outpost to extraordinary public resource: Tom and Cindy Secunda, Trinity Church NYC, and artist Sam Van Aken.
All funds raised support the Island's stewardship for the next 20 years and beyond—maintaining our open spaces, providing transformative public art and programming, and advancing innovative climate solutions. We hope you'll join us on November 5 at Tribeca Rooftop. Learn more at

#TBT to Hammock Grove...before the grove 🌳
Today it's known for iconic red hammocks, but once upon a time, Hammock Grove was just an idea sparked by early visitors to #GovernorsIsland. In 2014, the area opened to the public as part of the first phase of the 43-acre South Island Park. Now home to 1,300+ trees, this young urban forest is a vibrant haven for #biodiversity and a favorite spot for rest, shade, and relaxation.
As we celebrate our 20th year open to the public, we’re taking a look back at how far the Island has come. Enjoy this peek at Hammock Grove's transformation from concept to reality, and plan your next visit at govisland.org.
