On June 11, 2005, exactly 20 years ago, Governors Island opened to the public for the first time in its history.
The Island has served many purposes over the past 400+ years: a hunting and fishing camp for the Lenape, a military outpost for the Dutch and the British, and Army and Coast Guard headquarters for the U.S. military.
Today, Governors Island is a beloved destination for New Yorkers and visitors from around the world. With 120 acres of immersive open space, a focus on bold public art and cultural programming, a commitment to climate education and innovation, and a growing community of year-round tenants, the Island continues to evolve as a one-of-a-kind public resource in the heart of New York Harbor.
From just 8,000 visitors in our first season to nearly a million each year today, we’ve come a long way. Here’s to 20 years of public access, and to the next 20 years and beyond. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. Come celebrate with us—plan your next visit today!
