Watauga Dam, located on the Watauga River near Carter County, TN, stands 300 feet tall and has two generating units that produce 63 megawatts of hydroelectric power. Construction of this earth-and-rockfill dam began in 1942 but was temporarily halted due to World War II. Work resumed in July 1946, and the dam was finally completed two years later. #TBT

Serving the Tennessee Valley through Energy, Environment, and Economic Development.
About us
For more than nine decades, the Tennessee Valley Authority has provided affordable electricity, environmental stewardship and economic development opportunities to the Tennessee Valley. TVA was established by Congress in 1933 to address a wide range of environmental, economic and technological issues, including the need for low-cost electricity, and navigation and flood control along the Tennessee River system. TVA is fully self-financing, funding virtually all operations through electricity sales and power system bond financing. TVA makes no profit and receives no tax money. TVA’s power service territory includes most off Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia, covering 80,000 square miles and providing electricity to 10 million people at prices below the national average, TVA sales electricity to 153 local power companies and 61 directly served customers, including 54 industrial customers and 7 military and federal installations. Mission: TVA was built for the people – to improve the quality of life in a seven-state region through the integrated management of the region’s resources. The mission focuses on three key areas: • Energy – To provide reliable, affordable electric power throughout the Tennessee Valley. • Environment – To be a steward of the region’s natural resources. • Economic Development – To serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic development. ENERGY: As the nation’s largest government-owned power provider, TVA delivers reliable, competitively priced electricity local power companies and major industrial customers and federal installations. ENVIRONMENT: The Tennessee Valley Authority is committed to limiting the environmental impact of its operations and protecting the natural resources of the region. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: TVA helps strengthen the regional economy by building partnerships with communities and the business sector to foster job growth and retention.

We have been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a major federal grant to advance the nation’s next generation of nuclear energy with the GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy BWRX-300 small modular reactor at our Clinch River site near Oak Ridge, TN. This investment strengthens America’s nuclear leadership by supporting a domestic nuclear energy manufacturing base, growing a skilled workforce, and advancing reliable and affordable energy for the future. 🇺🇸 More info: http://tva.me/VmM750XAVRY #NuclearEnergy

Out with the old, in with the new! 🆕✨ We just upgraded a nearly 80-year-old butterfly valve with a new, massive 95,000-pound replacement at Watauga Dam. This valve is essential to shutting off water to the turbine in an emergency or for site maintenance. Upgrading aging assets is part of our ongoing project to ensure American energy dominance and continued reliability. 🇺🇸🔥

It’s Turkey Time! 🍗 Every Thanksgiving, we see a morning bump in electricity use as holiday chefs fire up their ovens! Across TVA, our employees and contractors work around the clock to keep the region powered for those big meals with family and friends. This season, we’re giving thanks for the communities we serve. 🤝 Happy Thanksgiving!

Earlier this month, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the TVA Veterans Association. The event was held in Knoxville and brought together retirees, employees, and supporters of veterans. The TVA Veterans Association is our oldest employee organization. It connects veterans with volunteer opportunities, promotes camaraderie and support among veterans, and advocates for their families. We were proud to highlight the mission of service that veterans bring to their roles within the Valley.

We're giving thanks by giving back! 🦃 Thanksgiving is a great reminder to share, but our commitment to fighting food insecurity continues all year long. Through volunteering and financial contributions, we help 9 regional food banks provide school pantries, mobile distributions, and essential equipment to serve our communities. The power we generate goes beyond electricity- it's the power of people coming together to serve. And for that, we are extra thankful this year. 🫶✨ Learn more here: http://tva.me/Nc0M50XxK0A
