Metrics That Will Save Fundraising Fundraising needs saving because: ▫️ It is increasingly reliant on fewer and fewer and older and older donors to post “record numbers” ▫️ It is an artifact of a different time when trust in institutions was much higher, when the middle class was more robust and flush with disposable income ▫️ It is a form of harvesting which assumes crops plant and nurture themselves or that harvesters can grow crops with only a scythe ▫️ Philanthropy can only be nurtured with seeds of hope and possibility, patient persistence, and differences made In short, fundraising is running short of funders and fundraisers, try as they might, don’t really “acquire” donors; that’s why they report their greatest challenge is “getting the first appointment.” This is evidence of eroding community. A new report, Reinventing the Cycle: Adapting Relationship Fundraising for Donors Who Use DAFs, by the DAF Research Collaborative uncovers best practices for donor advised fund (DAF) fundraising as DAFs are growing in popularity among donors. DAFs are charitable giving accounts that donors set up at sponsoring organizations, which then make grants to other charities at the donors’ request. Based on interviews with professional fundraisers, the report offers strategies for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding DAF donors. The report also includes a DAF-specific fundraising cycle outlining how the funds change nonprofit organizations’ fundraising management, while also highlighting the challenges and opportunities for nonprofits. “Interviews with the fundraisers made it clear that DAFs affect every stage of the fundraising cycle,” said Genevieve Shaker, PhD, professor of Philanthropic Studies and Donald A. Campbell Chair in Fundraising Leadership at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. “This illustrates that a tailored approach to the cycle is necessary.” Shaker authored the report along with Brigham Young University researchers Rachel M. Sumsion, MPA, and H. Daniel Heist, PhD, under the auspices of the DAF Research Collaborative. Today, we Enterprise Community Partners received notification that HUD intends to terminate its Section 4 nonprofit capacity building grants as well as funding for technical assistance programs that provide vital support to community groups and housing providers nationwide. Taken together, Section 4 and technical assistance programs provide a vital lifeline to communities across the country. Both provide support for building and preserving affordable homes, a particularly urgent need as we face an unprecedented housing crisis. These programs, though, aren’t just about affordable homes. They allow urban, rural, and Tribal communities to assess their own needs and leverage private dollars to invest in senior housing, establish local health clinics, fund childcare centers, and so much more. It’s no surprise that both initiatives have long had deep, bipartisan support. Make no mistake: Today’s decision will raise costs for families, hobble the creation of affordable homes, sacrifice local jobs, and sap opportunity from thousands of communities in all 50 states.
