#Hiring may have slowed in 2025 but the process is still a mess. And like a lot of other trends I've been commenting on lately, it seems there's an issue with people's relationship to reality. Recently, I chatted with Jessica Smith about what's going on in #tech hiring right now. I wasn't surprised to hear that companies are still running absurdly long interview processes (6-7 stages!), but a little disturbed by how they're simultaneously talking about about urgency to fill positions. As Jessica put it, "What's gotten you from one employee to 30 is not going to work from 30 to 50." I've seen this delusion play out before—someone in the company read a blog post about Facebook's hiring process and has convinced your team that they can implement the same rigor without offering Facebook-level compensation or opportunities. A few observations that resonated: - Too many companies are seeking "70-80% fits" but running processes designed to find mythical "100% fits" - Job descriptions are often so vague they're practically "throwing spaghetti at the wall" (300 applicants and still claiming no one's qualified? Your JD is the problem) - The "all you can eat buffet" mentality and "Goldilocks syndrome" has hiring managers rejecting qualified candidates endlessly. Companies don't seem to realize that a convoluted #interview process signals something profound to candidates: you're not confident in your decision-making I was particularly interested in Jessica's take on Canada's tech ecosystem—how the risk aversion is driving talent south of the border. When we say we support innovation but gatekeep opportunities, we're sending mixed messages about what we truly value. 🚨 Instagram is about to become part of the Google machine - think nonprofit visibility and monthly giving growth…here’s what’s happening 👇 Starting July 10, 2025, Instagram will begin allowing Google to index and display public posts from professional accounts (Business or Creator) in search results. That means the content you’ve been sharing - your impact videos, campaign photos, donor stories, and monthly giving invites could now show up outside the app. 👀 This is massive for nonprofits. Instead of only reaching people who follow you, your content could be discovered by anyone searching on Google. Think: 🔎 “Monthly donation to help feed kids” 🔎 “Support refugee families in the U.S.” 🔎 “How to give to climate justice causes” If you’re talking about it on Instagram AND your content is public and optimized, you could be showing up in search results. So what should you do right now? 📌 Step 1: Check your account type. Go to Settings → Account → Account Type To be indexed, you must have a Business or Creator account and be 18+ 📌 Step 2: Make sure your profile is public. Go to Settings and Privacy → Account Privacy → Make sure it’s set to Public Only public accounts will be included in Google’s indexing. 📌 Step 3: Update your content strategy. Instagram is no longer just social, it’s searchable. Start writing captions like they’re mini landing pages: • Use keywords supporters might search for • Add alt text to your images • Choose hashtags intentionally • Highlight your monthly giving program in plain, searchable language 💡 Why this matters for monthly giving: Your next recurring donor might not be scrolling Instagram. They might be Googling how to make a difference monthly - and your post could be the one that shows up. If you’ve been posting good content…now’s the time to make sure it’s searchable too. Let your Instagram do more than collect likes, let it bring in lifelong supporters!

Last night Amanda Coffee interviewed me for The New York Public Library's session about communications and personal branding for entrepreneurs, and it reminded me how much of communication comes down to connection. Here are a few lessons I shared: 💡 Your story is your strategy: Be clear, concise, and conversational about who you are, what you do, and why it matters. 🤖 AI won’t replace you, but someone using it might: Use it to brainstorm and structure ideas, not to replace your own voice. Authenticity always stands out. 📱 Curate your feed: Follow accounts that make you feel good. Mute the ones that don’t. Your digital presence should reflect your values, not just your visibility. 🌈 Build a brand, not just a following: Consistency and community beat viral moments every time. “We have a senior team that stays close to the work.” Ever heard that and thought, yep, that’s the agency for me? It’s a quality many clients appreciate, especially if they’ve been burned by a bait-and-switch at larger firms. But it’s also one of the more common claims I hear from small and mid-sized agencies. When you’re only talking to a handful of firms – or relying on your own recs and research – it’s easy for something to sound like a differentiator when it’s not. That’s the blind spot in so many DIY agency searches. When you’re making a high-stakes decision like choosing a new agency partner, a little outside perspective from someone who lives and breathes this every day doesn’t just save time. It helps you cut through the clutter and get it right the first time.

For a few years, I've seen the term "digital twin" pop up in pitches and headlines. This week, I had the chance to write about it. Keeping it Simple, Utilitarian, and Sustainable In my recent discussion on my podcast show with  Courtney Lalotra , Joanne Jodry, Emily - about luxury brands and products that are  worth thousands of dollars , as communicators, marketers , social change agent we understand that all this is a part of brand image and perception , which serves the aspiration of the 'wanna be' consumer mindspace.  However in my personal choice and decision making , over the years, I've found a profound value in a utilitarian approach to life.   It's about stripping away the excess, focusing on function and purpose, and finding beauty in simplicity.   In my 20+ years in the industry, I've consistently gravitated towards brands that prioritize substance over aspiration. I've witnessed countless attempts to create a "luxury" image that feels inauthentic, a facade built on fleeting trends and a reliance on brand logos to convey worth. Somewhere deep inside, we all recognize this artifice. We know that true value lies in quality, craftsmanship, and a genuine connection with the consumer. It's about building a brand that resonates with authentic needs and desires, rather than projecting an image of exclusivity. This isn't about eschewing all forms of luxury, but about discerning true value. It's about appreciating experiences, relationships, and the simple joy of a well-made, functional product. In a world saturated with noise and manufactured desires, I believe in the power of simplicity, authenticity, and a focus on building narratives that truly matter. What are your thoughts?
