If you are interested in growing in the Live Event business, or are just getting started, here are a few things I wish I had known earlier. These may not be what you want to hear, but I would like to share my experience so that you can learn from my mistakes. 1. If you really want to grow, be prepared to be uncomfortable. Growth is hard, it is stressful, it takes time. Don't look for the quick hack, look for the hard path. That will mold you into the stronger and better professional that you want to become. 2. You'll run into a variety of different personalities along the way; genuine friends and supporters; those who are indifferent to you and your challenges/successes, and those who actively work against you. They all have their place. Do not discount the importance of those who work against you. They are the ones that will force you to grow and be better, not because they care, but because you have to grow to survive. Stay strong, stay professional, do not let it become personal, even if they do. 3. Be more interested in finding solutions, than in placing blame. If you can fix and improve things there will always be a valued place for you. No one wins during finger pointing. 4. You will likely fail more than you win. This is the path to growth. Each time you fail, study what happened, learn how to improve, try new things and keep moving forward. Most of my best achievements came after many failures. 5. Listen. Listen a lot. Listen to the leaders, listen to the people in the trenches doing the job every day. Spend time learning, it will serve you well. 6. Do not be afraid. Fear kills more achievements before they happen that failure during the attempt. Go. Move forward. 7. Find the toughest, least glamorous job and do it with a smile. Guess who gets the first call for a gig next time. 8. Take care of yourself. You won't do anyone any good if you are down for the count. This applies to physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. 9. Don't let the business consume you, and do not let your job become your self identity. The business is relentless, and the job is what you do, not who you are. Find a time to take a break, you will actually be better by taking some time away. 10. Be good to people who can't do anything for you. We need the entire business to do well, not just your immediate team. If you can help someone grow, learn, become better, then we all win. Bonus - the sooner you realize that the Journey itself is the real reward, and not some dreamed up job or destination, they sooner you will understand how fortunate we all are to be in the Live Event Industry. Here’s what’s helped me keep the smaller events running smoothly while the big one takes center stage: 📄 Templatize everything – Agendas, vendor lists, comms plans. If you have to start from scratch, you’re already behind. 🌟 Assign clear ownership – Each smaller event has a single point of contact who can run with it without constant check-ins. 🧠 Batch your brain space – Block time to work on similar events or tasks together so you’re not mentally switching between a 5,000-person event and a 50-person dinner in the same hour. ☁️ Scale the vision, not the chaos – Smaller events don’t need every activation or detail the summit has. Focus on impact over extras. ☎️ Over-communicate with your team – Clear priorities and transparent timelines keep everyone sane (and prevent last-minute fire drills). Every event matters, but not every event needs the same type of attention. The art is in knowing when to go big and when “simple and strategic” is the smartest move.
