Our Cultural Resources team is playing a pivotal role in the maintenance and preservation of 17 historic highway bridges in Maryland. AECOM’s experts provided best practices for regular maintenance per state and federal preservation standards, specifically focusing on those related to safety barriers, in the most recent update to the Maryland State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Management Plan for Historic Highway Bridges.   The bridges, including the Blue Bridge in Cumberland and the Wicomico River Bridge in Salisbury, were selected as noteworthy examples of bridge design and important representations of Maryland’s transportation history.   This update was prepared as part of AECOM’s cultural resources on-call contract with the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT). A Flatiron and Herzog joint venture was awarded the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) I-5719C I-85 Railway Bridges project. This project will remove and replace three rail bridges and a vehicular bridge. All bridges span I-85 near Charlotte, North Carolina. We are excited to share that BCC Engineering has been selected to assist the City of Sarasota with Traffic Impact Studies, Circulation Reviews, and Analysis. Our work will include reviewing and drafting Traffic Impact Studies, updating Mobility Plans, and supporting City Planning staff with various reviews and assistance. This marks our third contract with a third division at the City, in addition to our Bridge Rehabilitation and ATMS contracts. We are proud to continue building this strong partnership and contributing to Sarasota’s mobility and infrastructure planning.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced a major step toward accelerating project delivery and helping America build again by issuing a Record of Decision (ROD) to accelerate completion of Corridor N of the Appalachian Development Highway System along U.S. 219 between Pennsylvania and Maryland. The ROD, prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and FHWA environmental regulations, announces the selection of the preferred alternative E-Shift Modified for the U.S. 6219, Section 050 Transportation Improvement Project. The project is located in Somerset County, PA, and Garrett County, MD, and extends the four-lane highway from Meyersdale, PA, to Old Salisbury Road, MD. Approximately six miles of the project is in Pennsylvania and two miles is in Maryland. This project will help the States complete Corridor N of the Appalachian Development Highway System, provide safe and efficient access for motorists traveling on U.S. 219, and bring improved transportation to the Appalachian Region. FHWA is working with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the lead state agency, and the Maryland State Highway Administration, which is partnering with PennDOT on this project.
