Walk into any Walmart store, and you’ll see associates solving real challenges every day. Today, we’re unveiling a new suite of AI and emerging tech tools to make that even easier – which is part of a broader strategy to invest in associates, empowering them with competitive pay, advanced tools, comprehensive training, and cutting-edge technology to grow their careers with us. 1️⃣ AI-Powered Task Management: As a store manager, I spent hours gathering and crunching data to figure out where my associates time would be best spent. Now, we’re using AI to do what took me and others years to perfect. For example, our new tool helps plan shifts and assign tasks more efficiently - reducing the time spent planning shifts from 90 minutes to 30. 2️⃣ RFID with AR for Apparel: Apparel has long been one of the most challenging categories to manage in retail — high volume, fast turns and constant movement make inventory accuracy a challenge. We’re making that easier with a new tool that combines RFID and AR. Associates can quickly scan racks, and the AR tool shows them which items need to go to the sales floor, making the process faster and more accurate. 3️⃣ AI-Powered Translator: We’ve developed a real-time translator that supports 44 languages, making communication easier for everyone in the store. It works for both text and speech and understands Walmart-specific brands and terms. 4️⃣ Conversational AI Tool Upgraded with GenAI: Store associates have used a conversational AI tool for years. Soon, it’ll get a GenAI upgrade, turning long process guides into simple, step-by-step instructions. This isn’t tech for tech’s sake. It’s about giving our people the same kind of intelligent support many of our corporate associates use in our day-to-day work — all while keeping Walmart’s signature service front and center. He cited a The Coca-Cola Company sales uplift of 9% For marketers, this is an incredible opportunity to influence shoppers right at the point of purchase. 🎯 Experiential Retail Media = Long-Term Impact Think product sampling, but reimagined with digital kiosks like CREOSO. Multi-sensory, engaging experiences delivering compound ROI over time. 📈 Example: Standard retail attribution window: 28 days Extend to 26 weeks → 3x higher ROI Extend to 52 weeks → 4-5x higher ROI Even winning over a small group of new consumers can fuel long-term brand growth. Retailers are undervaluing this today - a huge gap to close. 🤖 AI & The Digital Shelf Gen-AI search is reshaping how consumers discover products. Total share of search via Gen-AI grew 2% → 5% last year. Among early adopters: 8% → 39% in just one year! Here are some interesting stories from the world of retail for Thursday, 21 August: 🎯 Target has named veteran Michael Fiddelke as its next chief executive officer, betting that the insider will revive the storied retailer struggling with weak sales. Shares fell on the news. 🛠️ Lowe's beat Wall Street’s earning expectations on Wednesday as demand for home projects picked up during the quarter, but homeowners’ appetite for bigger projects remained softer. Comparable sales rose 1.1%. 👗 TJX reported earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street’s expectations and raised its full-year guidance, as it assumes it can offset higher costs from tariffs. Net sales came in at $14.40 billion, up 7%. 📉 Target reported another drop in quarterly sales and a steep decline in profits Wednesday. Total sales fell 1.9%, even with a boost from online orders. Same-store sales fell more than 3%. 👰🏽‍♀️ David's Bridal has launched on Shopify in the US and Canada.  David's has integrated with Shopify to lead a new era in bridal, special occasion and everyday fashion. 👖 Guess will transition to a private company. It will be acquired by Authentic Brands Group, which will acquire 51% of Guess's intellectual property. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. 🎄 Mixed sales and profit forecasts from major US retailers have prompted investors to question if this year's crucial holiday season will yield the windfall typically associated with a year-end shopping surge. 🏬  Ace Hardware Corporation has opened 100 new stores so far this year, and is on pace to open more than 175 new locations by the end of 2025. It operates almost 5,200 retail stores in the United States. 🚫 Bed Bath & Beyond has issued a statement from executive chairman Marcus Lemonis explaining the company’s decision to not open or operate stores in California, although online delivery will be available there. 👕 FatFace, the UK-based clothing chain, will close 23 stores in the United States and Canada due to economic uncertainty and rising costs. The closures will affect 145 jobs. 🏪 Seven & i Holdings' market value dipped below Aeon for the first time in two decades, as shares in the operator of 7-Eleven stores languish after Alimentation Couche-Tard abandoned its bid for the company. 🧱 Lowe’s is buying Foundation Building Materials, a distributor of drywall, insulation and other products, for approximately $8.8 billion as it intensifies its focus on professional builders. 💄 Estée Lauder said it would cut inventory and promotions to help mitigate rising costs, after the luxury cosmetic maker warned that a $100 million hit from tariffs would weigh on its annual profit forecast. 🧴 Coty shares fell after forecasting steep sales declines will continue as retailers clear out existing inventory and consumer demand remains tepid in the face of an uncertain economic outlook. #retail #retailnews #economy #DailyRetailNews

Walmart’s $9 billion ‘Stores of the Future’ coming to Central Ohio - 614NOW In an investment of $9 billion, Walmart is creating ‘Stores of the Future’ in 30 different states, and multiple of them will be here in Central Ohio. “Each store is designed to deliver a more modern shopping experience and improve the lives of our associates and customers from the moment they step into the new space,” said Walmart’s press release. Changes include a more modern storefront, with a designated area to grab a quick snack or drink. They’re also making it easier for Pickup & Delivery and DoorDashing. Refreshed exteriors and interiors feature new paint, new signs, and more shopping carts, and a new checkout design based on customer feedback.

Department stores are defying expectations in early 2025. Despite challenges in discretionary retail, visits to department store chains are down just 2% YoY in the first few months of 2025—an improvement from 2024’s 4% decline. A bevy of earnings to close out Wednesday and open up Thursday, and results are all over the map: * Jack in the Box same-store sales fell 7.1% (following -4.4% last quarter). CEO Lance Tucker said some of its challenges come from overindexing with Hispanic and lower-income guests who "face uncertainty and have pulled back their spending." * Dutch Bros Coffee up 6.1% (an acceleration from 4.7% in Q1). The company is "firing on all cylinders," according to CEO Christine Barone. * Burger King U.S., +1.5% (an improvement from -1.1% in Q1) * Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen U.S., -0.9% (an improvement from -4% in Q1) * Papa Johns North America, +1%, driven by transaction gains (first positive quarter since Q4 2023) * Krispy Kreme revenues -13.4% following the end of its McDonald's partnership; the company announced a turnaround plan focused on "profitable U.S. expansion and capital-light international franchise growth."
