When I first stepped into a solo HR role, I quickly realized something: People weren’t sure what to do with me (HR). Some saw HR as the admin behind onboarding paperwork. Others thought I was there to plan birthdays and holiday parties. A few even saw me as a “fixer” for employee issues—but not as a strategic partner. But here’s the truth: I brought experience far beyond admin tasks. I knew how to support leaders, shape culture, and drive change. I just had to prove it. So I started small. I learned what motivated each manager. I picked my battles carefully. I invited a few to lunch—not for formal meetings, just to connect. And little by little, they saw it: HR wasn’t just a support function. I was a partner. That didn’t happen by staying quiet. It happened because I spoke up, added value, and didn’t settle for the easy route. If you’re in HR—especially on your own—you have more power than you think. You get to define how your role is seen. HR Chronicles No Place for Politics in the Workplace When we talk about “workplace politics,” we're not talking about Left vs. Right Dem. vs. Rep. Conservative vs. Liberal We’re talking about the unspoken power plays, hidden agendas, and favoritism that creep into decision-making and culture. And let’s be clear—politics has no place at work. Why? Because politics creates winners and losers, not growth and progress. It shifts the focus from: • Collaboration → Competition • Merit → Maneuvering • Transparency → Hidden agendas Organizations that allow politics to thrive often lose their best talent—not because of lack of skill, but because the environment erodes trust and psychological safety. Instead of politics, let’s prioritize: ✅ Clear communication ✅ Fairness and equity ✅ Recognition based on contribution, not connection ✅ Leaders who listen, not gatekeep A workplace without politics isn’t naive—it’s intentional. It’s how you build a culture where people can bring their best ideas forward without worrying about whose toes they’re stepping on. Because when politics walks in, innovation walks out. Policy Not Politics. Civility is a Choice. These two statements aren’t just SHRM values—they’re my personal beliefs as a CEO and as a citizen. Following our President Joe Biden SHRM25 keynote announcement, I’ve read many of your reactions. I will always welcome different perspectives, yet today I’m deeply concerned by the incivility in some of the comments. We’re losing our ability to disagree without being disagreeable. This has been a noticeable trend for a while, that’s why we launched our call to increase Civility last year.  68% of employees say their perception of workplace civility is shaped by the behavior of their leaders.  We can measure the downfall of behavior in America’s workplaces. Civility is important because of the direct impact it has on us and our teams. A decline in respectful conduct – both online and in real life – is hurting productivity, relationships, and culture. Let me be clear: inviting President Biden is not about politics. It’s about learning from someone who has held one of the most demanding leadership roles in the world. Only 45 individuals in history have served as President of the United States and only a few are still alive to tell their stories. We are fortunate to hear from any one of them. Their experiences transcend partisanship and provide unique insights into leadership, decision-making, and resilience. Since 2022, SHRM has had the honor of hosting President George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton. Both brought their own perspective, shaped by their time in office and their personal journeys. This is not about political affiliation; it’s about learning from those who have navigated extraordinary challenges. And we are committed to bringing top leaders to the stage for the extreme leadership lessons they can share. My goal is to help all of us learn from leaders across a wide variety of sectors and beliefs—even when we don’t agree with everything they say or do. As workplace leaders, we understand this truth: Leadership is not about unanimity—it’s about understanding. You don’t have to agree with every speaker, or every decision made. In fact, respectful disagreement is a cornerstone of growth and innovation. But disagreement must never devolve into disrespect. Let’s remember that how we communicate matters. Let’s choose words that build bridges, not walls. Let’s act in ways that inspire collaboration, not division. Civility is a choice. It’s a choice we must make every day—in our workplaces, in our homes, and in our communities. Together, we can lead the way in showing what respectful, constructive dialogue looks like. Being too aggressive with an internal mobility program could do more harm than good. When you fill a position internally, you're also creating a vacancy. Unmanaged, a single vacancy can turn into a quiet cascade of backfills. These chains of vacancies are a trail of reduced productivity. In other words maximizing internal mobility does have a hidden cost: the greater the average length of your vacancy chains, the greater the churn your company experiences. Of course, the solution isn't to minimize internal mobility; it's to find the optimal balance. The value of internal mobility follows a U-shaped cost curve that every leader should understand. I arrived at the Gartner HR Symposium this week with a question that is keeping me up at night: What is my role as Chief People Officer/CHRO to help my company face the AI revolution? Judging by the 7,000 attendees—including hundreds of CHROs—I wasn’t alone. The opening keynote was insightful: HR’s focus must shift from “the workforce” to “the work.” In other words, it’s not just about preparing people, but about reimagining what work needs to be done, and how. AI is changing work in three fundamental ways: 1. Augment: Helping people work better and smarter. 2. Reengineer: Redesigning workflows and even entire functions. 3. Invent: Creating entirely new, AI-driven ways of working. What does this mean for HR? 1. Augment – Be More Directive. Most employees are open to using AI, but don’t know where it adds value. We hand out powerful tools like Copilot, but often forget the playbook. The result? Limited returns. HR must guide AI adoption—tying it directly to business challenges, partnering closely with IT, and making it a priority to work hand-in-hand with the CIO. We need to shift employees from AI users to AI value creators. 2. Reengineer – Anticipate Ripple Effects. Some organizations are redesigning work without HR at the table, leading to empty talent pipelines, skills atrophy, and fractured career paths. The CHRO must be the master of ripple effects—asking not just “Can AI do this?” but “What are the implications if it does in the short and long term?” We must define principles for redesign ahead of time (e.g., keeping humans in the loop at key points), prioritize the biggest ripple effects, and plan the work—not just the workforce. 3. Invent – Sense the Timing. AI will eventually automate more decisions, but the hype is currently outpacing reality. Our role is to reset expectations, sense when AI will truly impact roles, and pave the path to new growth opportunities—through career pivots with upskilling. Gartner predicts that by 2032, 30% of top economies will require certified human quotas. It means we need to think of the importance of people even for these new ways of working including agentic AI that will do tasks autonomously. My key takeaways: • The CHRO and CIO will be instrumental in building the future of work together. Jean-Francois Gamache CIO and Emmanuel Levitte CTO we will get even closer :-) • HR must move from experimentation to intentionality—guiding, prioritizing, and orchestrating change. And for that, HR must elevate its own maturity, its own digital dexterity to be true business partners. We must plan for the work, not just the workforce, to mitigate talent risks and unlock AI’s true value. • HR will need to be the mastermind of ripple effects to ensure we anticipate and mitigate risks and debate them in the C-suite.
