🚀 GemLite 0.4.7 is out! This release brings a +5–10 tokens/sec speed boost end-to-end for GEMVs— thanks to a trick that sounds odd but works brilliantly: 👉 We sample the outputs from pre-allocated zeros. Why it works: GEMVs rely on atomic addition, which means the output tensors must be zero-initialized (not empty). But allocating zeros is slow, even with pre-hooks. 1) Instead of allocating zeros on every kernel launch, we pre-allocate zero-filled tensors (just a few MB per shape) and reuse them like a cache. When the cache fills up, we simply call zero_() on the whole thing. Since that only happens every ~4096 tokens, the overhead is minimal. 2) To support cuda graphs / torch.compile, we must allocate the cache during graph capture, not before—otherwise, torch.compile throws a fit. If it is a fake-croc emboss… we need to talk. 🚨 Designers, let’s raise the bar on “leather creativity.” Another takeaway from my visit to the Sheridan World Leather Crafter Show: Chan Geer – a legend in the tooling world – grabbed our latest Olivenleder® hide, took it back to his workbench, tooled a full floral pattern that evening, and brought it back to the show: “I could probably do this without even wetting the leather.” That moment reminded me of three things designers sometimes forget: 1️⃣ Depth, not just surface. Leather can be sculpted and carved – not merely embossed. 2️⃣ Authentic character. Real grain ages with the product; synthetics only pretend. 3️⃣ Under-used potential. We’ve barely scratched the creative 3-D possibilities. Pro tip: even if you’ll never hand-tool a product yourself, taking one of these courses is eye-opening.
