When we talk about #banks mispricing commercial loans, sometimes the pricing is right but the structure is wrong. We show the profitability on a portfolio basis of how loan term drives profitability. A bank makes most of their money on a loan past month 66 when credit risk gets reduced. Banks should want the longest set of cash flows possible. ***Many Community Banks Are Unprepared for the Fallout of Large Bank Capital Rule Changes*** One aspect of the proposed modifications to the Supplemental Leverage Ratio for large banks—specifically, the exclusion of Treasuries from the denominator—hasn't received much discussion from the perspective of community banks. Yet it could have significant and troubling consequences. Large banks may become far more aggressive in attracting deposits, leveraging their competitive advantages—including the ability to make money on tight spreads. If they can buy Treasuries yielding 4% and fund them with lower-cost deposits—without allocating a single penny of capital—they will do it all day long. Money center banks currently have much lower loan-to-deposit ratios than community banks, so they haven’t had to compete too aggressively for deposits. But now they have a reason—and it’s an offensive strategy aimed at maximizing margin, not a defensive one. Community banks competing against these institutions must prepare for this shift. And in an increasingly digital world, that means just about every community bank needs to be ready.

One of the hardest things for a bank is getting customers to move their direct deposit, which is often the core of their stickiest relationship. PNC is trying to entice customers with a new automated direct-deposit switching system, working with fintech Atomic, Melinda Huspen reports in American Banker. Perhaps the biggest impact of the #GeniusAct for banks and credit unions is not the technology itself but the deposit disruption. The American Bankers Association and the Bank Policy Institute, along with others, are asking lawmakers to address the loophole in the legislation. Let's talk about it. The Loophole ➰ The Act specifically prohibits stablecoin issuers from paying interest on balances. However, the law does not prevent revenue sharing with the platforms that offer the stablecoins. For Example 💰 Coinbase can offer 'rewards', currently 4%, for holding money in USDC (issued by Circle) funded by their revenue share model with Circle. This is not directly paid by Circle and, therefore, is not subject to the law. Bottom Line ❕ If this is allowed to remain, there is a risk of more deposit displacement from banks and credit unions onto these crypto exchanges. The migration of dollars to money markets has already raised deposit costs, and this could exacerbate the issue even further.
