From my experience mentoring engineers across the country, most interviews draw questions from these 7 predictable areas: 🔴 1. BMD, SFD, and Deflected Profiles  ▶️ Can you sketch deflection trends?  ▶️ Do your bending moment diagrams? 🔴 2. Structural Concepts & Principles  ▶️ Why and when do you release Torsion in a Beam?  ▶️ When is a flat slab a risk in seismic zones? 🔴 3. Project-Based Decisions & Requirements  ▶️ How do you select footing types?  ▶️ What would you do if the soil SBC varies drastically across site? 🔴 4. Structural Detailing Rules  ▶️ Bar anchorage, lap positions, stirrup spacing—are you thinking practically, not just as per code? 🔴 5. IS Code Provisions & Stipulations  ▶️ Which IS codes apply where?  ▶️ What’s the ductility requirement in Zone IV? 🔴 6. Structural Modelling (ETABS, SAFE, etc.)  ▶️ How do you validate your model?  ▶️ Have you handled diaphragm issues or missing connectivity? 🔴 7. I’m working on legislation that will make it illegal for a Traffic Engineer to report to a Civil Engineer in California. The Traffic Engineering Department would need to be completely independent from the Civil Engineering Department. Here’s the problem with the current system. Traffic is a Title Act and Civil is a Practice Act. Supervising Civil Engineering egos squelching sound Traffic Engineering judgment is business as usual in California. Supervising Civil Engineers, you are reminded that if you come up with a lane configuration at a signalized intersection, and the Traffic Engineer beneath you conducts a thorough Traffic analysis and confirms that the lane configuration you are proposing won’t work and you kick that Traffic Engineer off of the project in retaliation, then you could lose your license.
