Cold outreach to executives: a game most sellers lose and shouldn’t play with their current skill set. The way most play is poisoning the buyer landscape with run rate high velocity prospecting motions. There is SO MUCH OPPORTUNITY for sellers who learn to do it right. But here’s what you need to overcome first: Facts: Only 6.4% of cold emails to C-level execs get a reply - sellers are losing 93 out of 100 times. Why? 1. Copywriters fuel centralized demand gen teams with email sequences made for broad markets. Then mass distribute them across wide definitions of their ICP (corporate speak for spam). This “non-hyper-relevant” outreach does nothing but piss off customer executives, many of whom receive 400+ unsolicited emails per DAY. 2. Tens of thousands of sellers copy “top-performing templates” from LinkedIn gurus. They work… until they don’t. Executives sniff out when they've been sent email templates faster than savvy investors flee a crypto scam. Strike two. 3. Sellers will actually attempt a well thought-out email but then every follow-up is “did you get my email?”, “I’m still waiting for your reply…”, or some other needy, begging request to drive activity for the rep, not value for the executive. These motions are making you worse, not better. Each email template you borrow from anyone else delays when you actually learn how to think and how to write. If you want to start executive conversations consistently, master these 4 non-sexy skills: 1. Contextual Intelligence Deep account research isn’t about getting informed. You are investigating how to make business transformation in a room full of people who have been burned by noobies before. That means reading annual reports, earnings calls, exec interviews, and investor presentations. You’re not just looking for facts. You’re hunting for patterns—proof that your solution matters to them. That’s how you earn executive trust. 2. Multi-layered Personalization Mention their job title or recent funding…and you’ll get ghosted like everyone else. It’s not about flattering their ego. It’s about relevance. Real personalization means: - Tying your message to a specific initiative they own - Speaking their language - Aligning with their budget cycle - Giving them a clear POV on why this matters now That’s when a CFO, CIO or VP will pause and think, “This seller actually gets it.” 3. Point of View Development In enterprise, you’re not just up against other vendors. You’re competing with status quo, internal priorities, and budget battles. That’s why you did the research, to form a sharp, strategic point of view on how you can help: “What transformation could this company achieve with our solution—and why now?”. Make your POV concise (2–3 sentences), tied to business outcomes. Don’t lead with product features or vague ‘we help companies do X’ lines. I’ve seen too many 7-figure opportunities die in pilot purgatory—not because the product failed, but because the seller hesitated to ask for real commitment upfront. Here’s what executive buyers are really saying when they ask for a free POC: “We’d like you to take all the risk while we decide if we might pay you later.” That’s not a partnership. Call it what it really is: A “strategic bridge investment.” This isn’t a trial—it’s the first phase of their transformation. The structure is simple: • Fixed scope with clear success metrics • A contractual trigger: full rollout signed by a specific date • Investment counts as credit toward the larger deal • No follow-through? Most sellers only uncover ONE level of impact in discovery. That’s why their deals stall, why their ROI slides don’t land, and why their champions can’t sell internally. The truth? There are 4 levels of impact—and if you miss even one, you’re selling half-blind. Selling is helping. But helping means going deeper than “company KPIs.” Here’s the framework I coach every AE on when they’re trying to win enterprise SaaS deals: 1. Company Impact This is where 90% of reps stop. “What’s the cost savings? What’s the revenue upside?” That’s table stakes. If you don’t tie your software to actual numbers—lost revenue, margin impact, labor cost—your ROI story collapses in front of a CFO. Example: A Service Cloud rep I coached quantified millions lost in unbooked hospital referrals because of missed scheduling calls. That turned a “$500K tool is too expensive” into “8X ROI, no-brainer.” 2. Buyer Impact Your champion has skin in the game. They left a stable job. Their reputation, career trajectory, even their family’s well-being are tied to this project. If you can show them how your solution makes them the hero internally, you create unstoppable personal buy-in. 3. User Impact These are the people who log in every day. If they hate the tool, adoption dies. If they love it, productivity soars, morale improves, turnover drops. Shadow them. Ask what frustrates them. Show them a better day in the life. 4. Customer Impact The most overlooked layer. How does your product improve the end customer experience? Faster service, better outcomes, less stress? For a hospital, it’s not about “efficiency.” It’s about a patient getting a life-saving scan booked in hours instead of days. Stop selling features. Here's how we're increasing meeting show rate from cold outbound via Calendly pre-call reminder + nurture workflows:   When it comes to cold outbound, having a strong pre-call reminder + nurture workflow is absolutely essential to ensuring prospects show up to meetings.   Without pre-call reminders, it’s not uncommon to see show-rates as low as 20-30%.   Here’s how you can set this up in Calendly to boost your show rates from cold outbound:   1/ Confirmation + Sales Assets   In the workflows section of Calendly, add a new workflow that is set to send a “Immediately when new event is scheduled”   In this email, what we want to do is add a 1-2 minute intro video explaining what to expect from the call, plus pushing the prospect to review the sales asset(s) that will help drive the sale.   In the same link as the intro video, we can link the sales asset as a CTA to the video.   The reason we don’t want to share the asset in the immediate confirmation email is it’s a harder CTA to get prospects to click on to - much easier to convince a prospect to watch a 1-2 minute video vs a 25 minute VSL.   For the sales asset, we can share our VSL, case studies, whitepaper - any resource that is helpful to thoroughly informing the prospect of your offering.   Our goal is to do everything we can to check out the sales asset(s) we’ve shared with them in this email as it will make our call go much smoother.   2/ Reminder Follow-up   We’ll be setting up reminder follow-up for the two following purposes:   1. To continue nudging prospects on the upcoming meeting to confirm their attendance 2. To get them to view the shared sales asset   The copy in each of these emails is either resharing the asset or asking the prospect if they’ve had a chance to view it, and also driving home how essential it is to review the asset before attending the meeting.   We also want to push them to confirm the meeting on their calendar as well in case they haven’t already.   Here’s the cadence of our follow-up:   > Confirmation email - immediately after booking > Follow-up 1 - 24 hours before > Follow-up 2 - 4 hours before > Follow-up 3 - 1 hour before > Follow-up 4 - 10 minutes before   This might seem over-kill, but we want to ensure if a prospect is thinking of canceling, that they don’t wait until the call is already live so we don’t end up wasting our time.   3/ Multi-channel   To make sure our follow-up is as visible as possible, we want to set up text + LinkedIn reminders as well.   Calendly already natively offers text follow-up, you can pair this alongside your email follow-up at a slower candance (so it doesn’t come off as spam).   For LinkedIn, we’ll use HeyReach.io to send out automated connection requests by routing new Calendly bookings to Clay via Calendly webhooks, then pushing to HeyReach using their native integration in Clay.   This helps us simply stay on top of mind so prospects are less likely to forget our meeting.

Most SDRs try to pitch first on cold calls. Big mistake. Start by winning the objection - then win the trust - then sell. Here’s a simple 5-step cold call framework I’ve taught to 1000s of SDRs👇 1. Opener → Trigger the truth 🎯 Use their name and yours ❌ Don’t pitch yet 💬 Ask a low-context question to gauge their energy Example: “Hey Mark, it’s Chris Ritson - got a minute?” Listen closely to their tone - it'll tell you a lot about how they are feeling so you can respond effectively. 2. Reason for the call - Get Aligned ✅ Outline why you called them 👬 Refer to their persona so they feel like you understand their day to day challenges and role. 💥 Example: “Reason I called is I work with [insert persona] like you on challenges like [insert common challenge]. Mind if I grab a minute to chat more on that? This acts as a double permission based opener. The goal? Make them trust you so when you ask 'pain' questions they'll be more likely to tell you. 3. Comfort Blanket → Uncover Pain ✅ Recap how you help 🧠 Use “typically” language to surface real problems by listing 2/3 common challenges. 💥 Example: “Typically, when I speak with [insert persona] they tell me A, B & C are challenges. Then Ask: “Do either of those feel familiar?” The goal? Make them feel understood before you qualify. 4. Problem Storytelling → Build belief 🧩 Share a relevant story 🔍 Focus on the problem, not the company logo 📈 Use tangible, specific results Example: “John’s team went from 45% to 85% hitting quota in 3 months...” No need for industry-perfect stories - just relatable problems. 5. Confident Recommendation → Book it 🗓️ Recommend next steps, take control 🎁 Highlight what’s in it for them ⏰ Offer 3 times Example: “I recommend a 30-min call. Free tomorrow at 1, 2 or 3 - what works best?” Pro tip: book it within 5 days = 90%+ show rate. I went from telemarketer at 19 to making 2.83 million in SaaS by 29. Here are 5 secrets to building a lucrative career in software sales: 1) Learn how to sell to executives early I’ve been able to repeatedly book meetings with execs. The secret? Executives care about outcomes—focus on business value. Talk about how you: → Reduce costs → Drive revenue → Create scalability → Reduce risk → Give competitive advantage I’ve engaged DIRECTLY with C-Level through: → Educating on something they didn’t know about their biz → Providing immediate cost savings → Aligning to what they care about Tip: The best PoVs are found through discussions with your customers. Once execs engage, the conversation heats up and they drive speed and size in your deals. 2) Focus on the right accounts. You must learn to find the accounts with the most potential. Real change came when I: → Focused on accounts that had growth → Found the ones with big problems to solve → Had multiple internal coaches and champions → Built multiple relationships in one account; vs a couple in many → Said no to deals that weren’t big enough to move the needle. Remember → Your brain is powerful, use it. → Watch what everyone else is doing, do the opposite. → Play big, its more fun 5) Optimize for wealth I have peers in their mid 30s who don’t own any real estate. They live in big cities in expensive apartments and take exotic trips. Create an investing strategy and stick with it. There is no recurring commission when you close a deal. Automate your saving and investing. My net worth took off when I: → Set up recurring investments → Bought real estate → Maxed out tax deductions → Focused on closing larger deals So: Be smart, get wealthy, have peace of mind, its fun.
