After 15+ years in nonprofits, here are my top4️⃣ wrong misconceptions about #fundraising, along with the truth: 1️⃣ Fundraising success happens overnight. [It doesn’t. What looks like “overnight” success is almost always the result of YEARS of consistent relationship-building & engagement. Apply a reasonable runway in your budget. Planes don't take off after 10 feet.] 2️⃣ Donors are one-and-done transactions. [Not even close! Most of your support will come from people who’ve been giving for years. That first gift? It’s typically the smallest .... not the largest. Related, just because a person has millions does not mean that they will donate millions.] 3️⃣ We just need to focus on getting new donors. [Say it with me: "retention is where the magic happens." Keep your donors starts with regular engagement and thoughtful stewardship. This also takes time.] 4️⃣ Donor retention is the fundraiser’s job alone. [Retention is a team sport. A new report, Reinventing the Cycle: Adapting Relationship Fundraising for Donors Who Use DAFs, by the DAF Research Collaborative uncovers best practices for donor advised fund (DAF) fundraising as DAFs are growing in popularity among donors. DAFs are charitable giving accounts that donors set up at sponsoring organizations, which then make grants to other charities at the donors’ request. Based on interviews with professional fundraisers, the report offers strategies for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding DAF donors. The report also includes a DAF-specific fundraising cycle outlining how the funds change nonprofit organizations’ fundraising management, while also highlighting the challenges and opportunities for nonprofits. “Interviews with the fundraisers made it clear that DAFs affect every stage of the fundraising cycle,” said Genevieve Shaker, PhD, professor of Philanthropic Studies and Donald A. Campbell Chair in Fundraising Leadership at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. “This illustrates that a tailored approach to the cycle is necessary.” Shaker authored the report along with Brigham Young University researchers Rachel M. Sumsion, MPA, and H. Daniel Heist, PhD, under the auspices of the DAF Research Collaborative. Why do some collaborative funds thrive while others stall? In my latest piece for the Center for Effective Philanthropy, I explore the various ways collaborative funds are formed, the different donor types they attract, and how these factors can shape their long-term impact. We know these funds have the potential to achieve scale, shift resources to communities, and reduce burdens on frontline groups. But too often, they’re set up in ways that reflect donor preferences more than community needs. In an effort to mobilise funds rapidly, the “how” of setting up the fund goes out the window. Fund leaders can spend inordinate amounts of time focused on finding the right donors rather than building engines for meaningful change. The Freedom Fund is a powerful example of how a diverse group of donors can rally around a shared goal. The initial commitment of our founders, and their continued support along the way, has been critical to our growth over 11+ years. Drawing on my experience and observations of other funds, I lay out three common pathways to launching a collaborative fund, and the challenges and benefits of each. There is no “right way” to set up these funds, but a more systematic approach, such as a structured effort to match donors to a collaborative fund that fits their interests, could make the journey smoother.
