Saia LTL released their 2Q25 earnings on July 25. You may recall that Saia has invested heavily in their network since the closure of YRC Freight, to the tune of $1.04B in 2024 and a projected $650M in 2025. The investments have fueled growth, but the ongoing LTL freight recession has worn on all carriers including Saia. Growth has slowed, as comps get tougher, putting pressure on the freight density needed to produce desired margins. So how has Saia traversed through 2Q25 with this backdrop? Let’s take a look: 🔴 Revenue was down very slightly at -0.7%. Shipment counts were down -2.8% and tonnage was up 1.1%. These numbers were slightly better than peer averages. 🔴 Margins worsened by 4.5 points, with their OR increasing from 83.3 to 87.8. Newly-opened terminals are now operating at a profit, which will aid margins in the future. 🔴Shipment size increased notably by 4.0% to 1,394 lbs. Most carriers are still seeing a decline in this metric. 🔴 Length of haul was flat, up just 0.6%.  🔴Rev/cwt excluding fuel dropped by -1.2%, but their increasing shipment size pushed this metric into the negative.     🔴 On a sequential basis, shipment counts were up 4.2%, tonnage was up 2.0%, and revenue was up 3.8%. These figures indicate continued loss of momentum. 🔴On a sequential basis, their OR improved nicely, from 91.1 to 87.8.  🔴 Saia’s claims ratio was 0.51%, and 60% of shipments were delivered in 2 days or less. 🔴Interestingly, Saia noted weakened trends OB from Southern California, suggesting the impact of tariffs has slowed imports and thus some LTL volumes. They did note pricing played an intentional role also. 🔴 Saia relocated customer service functions from a central location to their field locations. Customers should appreciate this move. Management was pleased with the sequential improvements, particularly the fact that their newer terminals, which continue to fuel their growth, are now producing profits rather than just breaking even. As they fill available capacity with freight, margins will continue to improve. This offsets the dynamic of their legacy terminals which, while more profitable, are not showing the same growth.   Saia is now firmly planted as the #6 LTL carrier in the US, in between R&L and ABF. Theirs is a great growth story over the last 10 years. What got Saia to this point was their investment in and expansion to the Northeast. Revenue growth came first, then profit growth. Saia is counting on the same with their recent investments and expansion. Saia certainly has the capacity now to be a Top 5 LTL carrier by revenue one day.
