  • Nonlinear Wavelet Transforms for Image Coding via Lifting

IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, Vol. 12 No. 12, 1449-1459

We examine the central issues of invertibility, stability, artifacts, and frequency-domain characteristics in the construction of non-linear analogs of the wavelet transform. The lifting framework for wavelet construction motivates our analysis and provides new insight into the problem. We describe a new type of non-linearity for use in constructing non-linear transforms: a set of linear predictors that are chosen adaptively using a non-linear selection function. We also describe how a…

We also describe how a previously studied family of non-linear filter banks can be extended through the use of prediction functions operating on a causal neighborhood. We present preliminary results for a synthetic test image.

  • Non-uniform relaxation procedure for multiresolution mesh processing

    Issued USPTO 08830235

An irregular connectivity mesh representative of a surface having an arbitrary topology is processed using a non-uniform relaxation procedure. The non-uniform relaxation procedure minimizes differences between vectors normal to faces of pairs of triangles having a common edge and located within a designated neighborhood of a given vertex. The relaxation procedure may be used to construct subdivision and pyramid algorithms for performing processing operations such as upsampling, downsampling and…

The relaxation procedure may be used to construct subdivision and pyramid algorithms for performing processing operations such as upsampling, downsampling and filtering on irregular connectivity meshes. The signal processing algorithms may be utilized in applications such as smoothing, enhancement, editing, texture mapping and compression.
