Over 50 years ago my introduction to the world of sales at a plumbing wholesale distributor was brief but memorable. I spent a couple of weeks working the counter, taking care of customers and getting familiar with the inventory. Then, I was handed the keys to a compact Datsun (that’s a Nissan, for the younger crowd), and the owner gave me his version of sales training before sending my out on my customer calls: “Keep your hair neat and your shoes shined,” he said. “Tell them I sent you—and ask them what they need.” That was it. Simple words—but great advice: • Look your best—you sell yourself first. • Ask what your customers need—so you can provide real solutions. The rest is fluff.

A reality I’ve seen many times in sales: A product is sold with different strategies by different sellers. Sometimes the price is fair but in some cases, they artificially increase the ORIGINAL price, then offer a big discount, and proudly tell customers “Hey, we’re giving you a huge deal!” While in reality, no store has ever sold it at that so-called original price!! This makes me think that in #sales, what should come first? - Honesty and transparency with customers? - Or just #marketing strategies that regardless of ethics, only aim to maximize profit and sales?

7 years ago, as a rookie in the field of sales I used to think selling was just about pushing a product, closing deals and moving on. But after years in the field, I’ve learned something different. Selling is not just getting someone to buy a product. Selling is actually connecting a customer with something that fits them, their taste, their moments, their celebrations. That’s when they don’t just buy once, they keep coming back, because your product has become part of their good times. Thats when you actually create a demand. Establishing this foundation creates a slow expandable swirl of rotational sales. That connection builds trust with your shops and retailers too. It’s about building a relationship that helps their business grow while giving your product a solid place in the market. That’s the kind of selling that actually lasts, the kind you can feel on the ground, every day.

The fastest way to fail as a salesperson is to try to please everybody. Not everyone is your customer. Not everyone deserves your time. Not everyone would be okay with your solution, your pricing and your methods. And that's absolutely fine. Your product/services should repel “unfit” customers as much as it attracts “fit” customers.
