Does seniority always equal leadership? 🚫 Not anymore. In conversation with People Matters, Udaiy Khanna, CHRO at Dalmia Bharat Group, warns how the seniority trap can silently kill culture — and why building talent-first, data-backed, cross-functional pipelines is the way forward. People Matters Udaiy Khanna seniority is not equal to leadership position, unless it is supported by merit. It happens in family owned business for family members. In Tata Steel, I worked for 16 years, seniority matters while respecting but progression depends on all latest in competencies and its exhibition for the benefits of the org. Present MD joins as Graduate trainees ...now MD ..org spends so much of resources on their development ....InsEad, ivy league kind of institutes are being deployed for their leadership training ...it starts with a scientific Talent management process...seniority is ok, but you have to earn your position by displaying extraordinary traits of leadership. Trap is not about seniority, it is reflection of an incompetence of a founder or chairman ..as they have been living with high sense of insecurity.
Well articulated Udaiy Khanna I like the conclusion "“Leadership mobility, cross-functional collaboration, and purpose-driven growth—these are the ways we remain forward-thinking, while staying anchored in who we are.”
Well said Udaiy Khanna I agree with you . Identifying Talent with the Organisation , Development of these Takent for Future Leadership and giving the Opportunity to those Leaders to run the Business. This is the Mantra of True Talent Development & Leadership Development.
Great learning
Absolutely right Sir 🙏
Congratulations sir
You are 100% right sir. "Seniority is a trap" when it is leading the organisation whereas to avoid this trap better to keep seniors at guiding or mentor position not leading or heading position. For example today is the AI era in this case the experience of super seniors kills the culture we want to adopt this latest technology just because they don't have such experience in the past. Opposite to this the new generation talent leads it by example and sets a culture that brings an organisation forward. Thanks for bringing this topic in discussion sir.
