Defining business success, one alignment at a time
I want to try to link two concepts together; the effect of company strategy, processes and people not being in alignment and cognitive dissonance of HI, the human intelligence, and AI (what I call HI*AI).
For many years, we were focused on the ‘2D’ corporate environment of creating and articulating a company strategy for, say, the next 5 years, then communicating it down the structure to the tactical and operational levels. The ability of the organisation to 'translate' the strategy into achievable practices and procedures that the workforce could or would follow, then went a long way to determine how well the strategy performed and produced the desired outcomes that management and the shareholders craved.
Strategy was relatively quick to decide upon. You bring the three wise men/women into a room with the C-suite team until there is a white smoke moment and out pops the buzz words of what we will be in the future. Then the internal systems needed to be aligned to the new strategy paradigm. Aspects such as your CRM, marketing, supply chain and ERP as well as HR affected greatly the workforce’s ability to effectively implement the strategy. Difficult but doable over time.
Then the poor people. Depending upon several factors, especially including psychology and politics, the workforce was left to struggle through the inconsistencies of edicts/directives and lack of communication and training on the new processes to follow. A wonderful game of tug-of-war played by middle and top management creating a range of reactions from delight to stress, motivation to depression, success to failure. Label me a cynic but I was called into too many situations where the ‘playbook’ had come to the last page and still the super tanker had not changed direction with the C-suite asking, “why don’t they just do what we tell them to do?". Much more difficult to fix but possible over time especially if you remember the old maxim, ‘train for skills but hire for behaviour’.
Today we get to play ‘3D’ chess with the super-fast arrival of AI. Our ability to align and correctly collaborate between HI*AI will be the key success factor.
