Here's What Supply Chain Leaders Should Know After the U.S. Government Shutdown

On Wednesday, November 11th, the U.S. President signed a funding bill that ended the longest government shutdown in American history. But don’t expect “business as usual” in the coming days or weeks.

While CBP remained on the job, interdependencies with Partner Government Agencies (PGAs) have created a backlog across permits, reviews, requests, and approvals. Delays may still occur due to air traffic control staffing shortages. Also, the FAA has grounded all MD-11s after an airplane crash earlier in the week in Louisville, triggered by an engine falling out. Reduced capacity could cause industry disruption.

Combine all of this with peak-season congestion and the upcoming holidays, and we may not see a return to normalcy until next year.

Here's what you can do: prioritize aggressively, file flawlessly, communicate calmly, and document everything. These government agencies are working through an enormous backlog; you can help keep things moving by being as complete, clear, and patient as possible. Repeated emails, calls, and communications can slow progress and cause friction.
