  • Devils Day Tattoo is proving that downtown revitalization can be bold, creative, and anything but rigid. They’re restoring and revitalizing traditionally historic buildings, while adding a little flavor to the community. “We’re the opposite of a tight suit,” says co-owner Val Magee. And in true Thanksgiving spirit, they’re all about bringing the good stuff without the stuffy. The best revitalization projects are just like a great bowl of stuffing: full of character, a little unexpected, and made with heart. • The City of Chelsea, Michigan has earned its Essentials designation through the Redevelopment Ready Communities program, marking a key milestone in its commitment to strategic, community-driven development! "This has been a long-time goal for the city,” said Mayor Jane Pacheco. “It represents the accumulation of a lot of work on behalf of city staff over a number of years. We are delighted to be recognized for the work we have done, but more importantly the designation means that we have tools and systems in place that make working with the city easier and more efficient. We look forward to the opportunities that the designation opens for the city." Congratulations!

  • Happy #FourPointsFriday! It's a time for us to highlight what's happening in the world of Michigan Main Street. The #MiMainStreet team showed up strong at the Michigan Downtown Association's Annual Conference in downtown Rochester! Leigh Young, AICP, Senior Main Street Specialist, kicked off a high-impact panel on how downtown managers can harness different data sets - from Esri market insights to Placer.ai visitor trends - to shape smarter, more strategic revitalization work. Jillian Tremonti, Promotions Specialist, took the stage to demonstrate how to transform data into stories that resonate, and how to build a content ecosystem that keeps a downtown’s identity front and center. The Michigan Main Street team is proud to collaborate with the Michigan Downtown Association as we continue driving vibrant, thriving downtowns across Michigan!

Since 2017, the City of Grayling has been working behind the scenes to bring its vision to life. The community approved a five-story mixed use building in the heart of downtown. Grayling shows that when development is approached thoughtfully, a community can preserve its character while building a stronger and more resilient local economy. It was clear that this project needed to be showcased to the surrounding communities. In partnership with NORTHEAST MICHIGAN COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS (NEMCOG), the MEDC hosted a "Peninsula Exchange" with communities from regions 2 and 3 to discuss how Grayling moved this project forward. Representatives from 9 different communities were present! Participants were also able to see firsthand how a five-story mixed-use building fits into Grayling’s downtown. It is a clear reminder that development is not about losing your identity. It is about evolving in a way that reflects the needs and values of the community. This kind of progress happens when local leaders and staff have access to the training, tools, and information needed to make informed and confident decisions. We're sending big thanks to Marilyn Chrumka, Vice President of Development at Michigan Community Capital, Doug Baum, Executive Director at NEMCOG, and Denise Cline, Deputy Director and Chief Planner at NEMCOG, for partnering with us and helping elevate these success stories in Region 3.
