  • A HUGE WIN - White Bay Power Station received The Greenway Award for Heritage at the 2025 NSW Architecture Awards. “The work at White Bay Power Station is an exemplar of doing “as much as necessary…but as little as possible”. Conservation works backed by decades of careful research and prudent architectural interventions have allowed the building to open to a wide range of contemporary cultural uses and audiences. The machinery and interiors remain, telling the story of the people who worked here as it ushers this mighty building into the present, and into its future as a public, cultural anchor for the regeneration of the Bays Precinct,” commented the jury. Placemaking NSW and Design5 Architects worked carefully to retain and repair the fabric of the building rather than replace it with new materials and were thrilled to receive this prestigious award. In partnership with Macquarie University and the Committee for Sydney, today we were thrilled to host renowned Spanish urbanist Salvador Rueda Palenzuela at White Bay Power Station. Over 200 people came to the event, "Sustainable Urban Living: Ecology-driven Renewal for Sydney", to hear from Salvador as he discussed the creation of Barcelona’s Superblocks. The audience nodded along as Salvador shared how Superblocks feed urban ecologies, cleaner, more efficient transport, and slower, greener pedestrian-friendly public spaces. Ten years on these Superblocks are now looked on as a model for sensitive, integrated sustainable city living, where people and nature are are the focus, not cars and concrete. Here’s to a softer and more inclusive future.     Shout out to Eamon Waterford, Annie Tennant & Rowena Welsh - Jarrett
