7 Canadian food brands are coming with us to China. For some, it’s a visit. For others, it’s a reckoning. Next week, we’re leading the official Canadian Health Food Association x Chowtime Foods trade delegation to the China International Natural Health & Nutrition Expo in Guangzhou and the Chowtime Foods x Canadian Food Exporters Association delegation to SIAL China (Shanghai) It’s a chance for Canadian food brands to test something most never do: Their product, inside a real, foreign market. This isn’t a branding exercise. It’s a live-fire test. Real buyers. Real stakes. No polite feedback. We’re not pitching hypotheticals. We’re pressure-testing product, pricing, and positioning in real time. → Will the story land? → Will the packaging hold up? → Will the margins survive the ask? The answers will come fast. Some doors will open. Some won’t. That’s exactly the point. I told them two things: One: Even a sliver of a niche in China can be bigger than your whole market in Canada. Two: We’ve worked with the Canadian Trade Commission for years. But for the first time in a long time the energy’s changed. This delegation isn’t checking boxes. They’re hungry. They’re moving. The OCS Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) recently announced its Joint Venture: Pre-Roll Summer program, aiming to attract consumers from the illicit market through temporary price reductions on pre-roll products. While addressing the illicit market is undoubtedly important, Retailers in our group chat have some concerns about the effectiveness and sustainability of this approach: 1️⃣ Temporary Pricing Risks Customer Dissatisfaction: Short-term discounts may initially attract consumers, but when prices inevitably revert, customers could become frustrated, feeling misled or dissatisfied. This undermines trust and long-term brand loyalty. 2️⃣ Misalignment with Consumer Preferences: Data consistently shows illicit market consumers predominantly purchase bulk flower and edibles rather than pre-rolls. By focusing exclusively on pre-rolls, the OCS risks missing the mark, ultimately failing to significantly alter purchasing behavior. 3️⃣ Impact on Margins Amid Rising Costs: Independent cannabis retailers are already navigating high taxation, inflationary pressures, and escalating operational costs. Further margin compression through enforced price reductions threatens the financial health and sustainability of these vital small businesses. 4️⃣ Disadvantages for Independent Retailers: Larger corporate chains with access to extensive data-sharing agreements and economies of scale can easily leverage such initiatives to offer even deeper price reductions. Independent retailers, lacking similar resources, find themselves increasingly disadvantaged in the marketplace. 5️⃣ Need for Genuine Consultation: The absence of thorough consultation with independent retailers prior to launching such initiatives creates programs disconnected from practical market realities. Genuine collaboration would ensure strategies align with retailer sustainability and consumer preferences. 6️⃣ Long-Term Market Risks: Continuous price-driven competition conditions consumers to expect unsustainably low prices, potentially undermining market stability and profitability in the long term. I strongly encourage the OCS to engage actively and transparently with independent cannabis retailers in Ontario prior to launching new initiatives. They will get a lot more 'buy-in" from retailers to their programs. Collaborative discussions can lead to sustainable, consumer-focused strategies emphasizing product quality, diverse assortments, and educational outreach rather than short-term price manipulation.
