  • Last week, we had an eventful week at Voima Ventures filled with milestones across our portfolio. Here are a few highlights in case you missed it 👇 👓 AAC Technologies acquired Dispelix: Dispelix is originally a spinoff from VTT and has been at the forefront of diffractive optics and waveguide technology. Dispelix is moving to truly global commercialization across consumer electronics, but also automotive and defence. The partnership with AAC will scale it faster than ever. 🥼 Leading the €7.5M round in Gosta Labs - an AI operating system that captures each patient encounter as high-quality structured data, which supports decision-making in real time, and frees clinicians from hours of manual documentation. Founded by serial entrepreneurs Lauri Sippola and Henri Viertolahti 🛰️ Kuva Space raises €8M in four hours with Springvest Oyj. A testament to both their traction and to the rising global demand for resilient space-based intelligence. Kuva Space continues to shape the future of Earth observation with both speed and execution. A week like this captures why we invest in science-based companies with an impact on people, planet, and industry. The Nordic deep-tech ecosystem is accelerating, and we are excited to help shape its trajectory 🚀

  • Today we’re proud to announce that we're leading the €7.5M seed round in Gosta Labs, a team shaping what the future of cancer care can look like when world class clinical expertise meets real, usable AI 🚀 Oncology is entering an era of immense complexity. Millions more patients, hundreds of cancer types, rapidly evolving treatment options and care teams stretched far beyond what current systems allow. If we want healthcare systems to keep up, the tools must change. Gosta Labs is building an AI operating system that captures each patient encounter as high quality structured data, supports decision making in real time, and frees clinicians from hours of manual documentation. The company is already working with leading hospitals across Finland, Switzerland, the Baltics and Australia 🌏 We invested because this is the type of company that can redefine a critical part of global healthcare: a founding team with a proven track record, deep medical understanding, and the technical ambition needed to build a trustworthy AI foundation for complex medicine. In the video below, the Lauri Sippola, the CEO and one of the co-founders, shares why this matters and how the technology is already reshaping oncology workflows. Jussi Sainiemi is also sharing why we chose to invest 💡 Participating co-investors in this round are COR Group Oy, the Aho family, and both existing and new investors, including Reaktor and a group of notable angel investors. Welcome Gosta Labs. The next chapter of intelligent, patient centered cancer care is being built now.

  • We're celebrating a milestone moment as Dispelix enters a new era together with AAC Technologies 🙌 As one of the earliest investors, we have had the privilege to support the company from its VTT origins to becoming a global leader in diffractive optics and waveguide innovation. With the rapid rise of AI, the world is ready for a new wave of AR adoption. Dispelix is uniquely positioned to deliver across consumer electronics, automotive and defence, and this partnership will accelerate global scale and impact. Congrats to the whole team and thanks to all co-investors, board members and of course the operative team for making this happen ✨

Voima Ventures is proud to announce exit from its Fund I as Dispelix joins forces with AAC Technologies. Originally a spinoff from VTT - Dispelix has been in the forefront of diffractive optics and waveguide technology. Generative AI accelerates the adoption of AR, and Dispelix is moving to truly global commercialization across consumer electronics, but also automotive and defence. The partnership with AAC will scale it faster than ever. A huge congratulations 💙 ✨ and thank you 🙏🏻 to the exceptional team behind the journey: founders Antti Sunnari & Juuso Olkkonen, management including Maija Puustinen and David Fornue — and every engineer, operator and partner who pushed the frontier forward. Warm appreciation to the early believers such as professor Jyrki Saarinen and from Lifeline Ventures, who supported the team and vision with VTT from day one. Later on our friends from Tesi, 3M and Atlantic Bridge joined, company also raised funding via Springvest. We’re excited to see this next chapter unfold — and proud to have supported the company on their journey.

  • Slush 2025 - It's a wrap ✨ 🚀 Once again, Slush does what it does best - connecting people and bringing light to the impact that startups and scale-ups have on society and on our future. Some of our key highlights this year: ⭐ Future AI talent at Junction. We hosted workshops at Junction in Espoo, where over 1,500 developers participated in a 48-hour hackathon. It was inspiring to see so many students and hackers build solutions around generative AI, quantum, and robotics. Huge thanks to our friends at Junction and to Aino Bergius (CEO of Slush) and especially Joel Lahtinen (CEO of Junction) + team for championing inclusive, tech‑savvy leadership. ⭐ ELLIS Institute Finland launch with the Nordic and global AI leaders gathering to discuss how to connect science and societies for building the next AI companies. Great conversations Peter Sarlin Oliver Molander Ilkka Paananen ⭐ Ecosystem workshops & side events. Our team joined side events hosted by Nordea, OpenAI, Pale blue dot, OTB Ventures, Amadeus Capital Partners, Kvanted ALTOR, to name a few. We met with investors, LPs, and corporates to discuss topics from quantum chips to sustainable materials. Across the week, we met over 150 fellow VCs and hundreds of founders. ⭐ Hosted AI drinks for the DETECT network (Deep tech venture collective) with our co-members APEX Ventures and our friends at Wave Ventures. These informal gatherings help build trust and bring together the important networks across the continents. Join us next year, we promise karaoke well into the night.. ⭐ Y‑Science & life‑science innovation. Y‑Science, Slush’s life‑science side event, returned for its 8th edition with 1,500 attendees. The event encourages collaboration between researchers and industry, and we were delighted to see world‑class biotech and health‑tech teams from the University of Helsinki and VTT on stage. What’s next? Slush 2025 showed that deep‑tech is no longer a niche. Europe’s AI ecosystems are blooming, the defence sector is drawing top talent and capital, and our universities are spinning out world‑class companies. Dual‑use technology allows us to hedge against uncertainty and build the next wave of tech companies. We’re have selected our own Voima Ventures top 100 startups from Slush and are planning follow‑up meetings. Thank you to our friends at Y‑Science, Aalto UniversityVTTNordeaJunction, DETECT, and countless founders for making Slush such a vibrant gathering. 🏋🏻♂️ Live from Turku: AI research meets real life, opening of ELLIS Institute Finland with the support by Peter Sarlin is more than a ribbon-cutting – it’s a statement about how Europe wants to build research and AI - with high ambition (at the end of the post you can read my remarks 👉🏻 and thoughts). In the 'Frontiers of AI research' -discussion moderated by Serge Belongie with Jaakko Lehtinen, Kyunghyun Cho, Negar Kiyavash, Amy Loutfi and Bernhard Schölkopf, the message was clear: we need continued, deep, foundational research and much stronger bridges between academia and industry if we want the next wave of AI breakthroughs to be built here – not just imported. And how to connect science with society? Led by serial AI investor & entrepreneur Oliver Molander, with Nina Laaksonen, Alexandra Gylfe, Kristo Ovaska and Ilkka Paananen - the message was even more clear: startups and growth companies are fundamental for the European success. "The race has only just began" “Deep tech and spin-outs are the driving force behind deep tech growth.” "Now we need to focus on building growth companies" "Europe's super power is regulation" "Had we gained the growth of Sweden - we could have paid back all of the governmental debt" An my thoughts? It is heartwarming 💙 to see the alignment in the academic - government - Nordic and EU level in the ambition. Investments are there, talent is there, ambition is there. But we lack one thing. Seriously - we need to fix it. Clock speed for growth. So kudos Kristo Ovaska for your insights 💪🏻 . As a first mover in VC since 2019, Voima Ventures has been investing across three funds to over 50 science driven deep tech companies across Nordic EU. It is our job and purpose - to scale solutions from science. Over 70% of our portfolio spins from universities and research institutions, so we know the drill. It all boils down to small things in clock speed - in removing market entry barriers (regulation), speed in building companies and spinning out companies from academia, and ability build the next generation of scientific founders to scale companies. Does Europe have a chance? Tough question. Europe is slow. My favorite economist Bengt Holmstrom gave a radical thought - let's remove the current regulative model (directives), just leave it to one level. That would seriously move the needle. The real frontier isn’t just bigger models or who builds AI agents – it’s how fast we move from papers or research to products to public value. If you work in research, startups or policy in Europe, this is a good moment to ask: 👉 What am I doing to shorten the distance between science and society That’s where the next generation of great AI and deep tech companies – and real impact for people, planet and industry – will be created. Thanks Marten Mickos for great hosting. Let the work continue. #AISummit #ELLIS #AIresearch #DeepTech #Finland #Turku #ScienceAndSociety
