Organisations need to re-configure themselves in this fast-paced uncertain world. Information is reaching people way before 'innovation' or 'intervention' does. Institutions face a world outside that is fluid and characterised by constant change. Repetition is failing. Hierarchies are road-blocks to growth.
Ashoka was no exception. Our aim was to build an Everyone a Changemaker world - a world full of problem-solvers. Since more young people are more aware, and taking more actions…Organisations need to re-configure themselves in this fast-paced uncertain world. Information is reaching people way before 'innovation' or 'intervention' does. Institutions face a world outside that is fluid and characterised by constant change. Repetition is failing. Hierarchies are road-blocks to growth.
Ashoka was no exception. Our aim was to build an Everyone a Changemaker world - a world full of problem-solvers. Since more young people are more aware, and taking more actions with more agency than ever before, they will often be at crossroads - to become a part of the problem or the solution, subconsciously.
To make this happen, in 2017-2019, we came together to purpose ourselves to work more effectively in the present and in future. We set up a system where everyone leads and configures fluid teams of teams for different purposes and objectives, everyday. Grateful to have this opportunity to anchor and manage this transformation with a wonderful team of leaders in Ashoka.Other creators -

The Underbelly of Donor-Advised Funds — Lessons for India’s Philanthropic Future Following my last post on this topic, I engaged with several leaders and practitioners and uncovered what many describe as the underbelly of the U.S. donor-advised fund (DAF) ecosystem which offers opportunities for learning and evolving. DAFs were conceived to democratise philanthropy — offering flexibility, immediate tax benefits, and professional management of charitable assets with donors retaining advisory privileges, through the 1968 Tax Reform Act, US. Yet, in practice, the structure has created unintended consequences. In 2023, U.S. DAFs held over US $251 billion, while annual disbursements totalled only US $55 billion. There is no legal time-bound mandate for the remaining corpus to reach operating charities. The funds, meanwhile, continue to grow tax-free, often under management structures that derive incentives from asset accumulation rather than social deployment. The concern is not one of legality but of behavioural economics and governance design. When the system rewards holding rather than releasing capital, philanthropy risks drifting from purpose to performance. The tax benefit is realized immediately; the social benefit, often years later — if at all. As India’s philanthropic landscape matures, we have a window to design a next-generation DAF framework that avoids these pitfalls. We must ensure purpose integrity, time-bound utilisation, and transparent end-use of funds, while still encouraging endowment corpus building as a distinct, well-governed stream. Incentives should be calibrated to reward impact velocity, not merely asset growth. Philanthropy, at its core, is meant to circulate abundance — not warehouse it. Can India Lead the Next Wave? The social sector is shifting from funding activities → to funding results. Two powerful models driving this change are: 🔹 Development Impact Bonds (DIBs) Outcome payer: Donors/Foundations Example: Educate Girls DIB in Rajasthan (UBS Optimus Foundation + CIFF) tied funding to enrollment & learning outcomes for girls. Best suited for: education, health, skilling, women empowerment in India. 🔹 Social Impact Bonds (SIBs) Outcome payer: Government Example: Peterborough Prison SIB in the UK reduced reoffending rates, government paid back only when outcomes were achieved. Best suited for: Skill India, Ayushman Bharat, Smart Cities, Swachh Bharat where policy alignment is critical. ✅ How they work (both models): Investors put in upfront capital. NGOs/service providers deliver programs. Independent evaluators verify outcomes. Outcome funders (donor or govt.) repay investors only if results are achieved. 🚀 India’s Opportunity DIBs can expand quickly with philanthropy & CSR backing (less red tape).
