Our Co-Founder and CEO Vanessa Giorgia Barzasi has been busy attending the Valencia Digital Summit (VDS) recently, having the opportunity to present BioBright as a solution to help ports reduce carbon emissions and protect our oceans. #VDS2025
Over the past few days, I’ve been fully immersed in Valencia’s vibrant innovation scene, and it has been nothing short of energizing. Every conversation, meeting, and exchange of ideas left me inspired and curious about what’s possible when creativity meets action. The Valencia Digital Summit VDS was a highlight, an incredible gathering of founders, investors, and innovators under the theme “Collaborate Today. Transform Tomorrow.” I had the opportunity to present BioBright at the summit and connect with other founders, investors, and ports, which was truly exciting. I also had the pleasure of visiting the Port of Valencia, Europe’s 5th busiest port. Seeing the scale and operations firsthand reinforced how much opportunity there is to make a real impact, from reducing emissions to improving water quality and supporting marine biodiversity. Inaugurated by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), every year the last Thursday of September serves as an important reminder of shipping safety, maritime security, and the protection of the marine environment. This year’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”, aims to remind us of the essential role our ocean plays at sustaining life as we know it today. The theme also resonates strongly with global initiatives like the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, at a time when sustainability matters now more than ever. As we reflect today, we are reminded of just how vulnerable our ocean actually is. What an incredible opportunity! This Tuesday was truly unforgettable, even though my journey to the Maritime Innovation Investment Pitch Event was not easy. My flight was delayed by 5 hours, I spent 2 hours stuck on the plane without air conditioning, and by the time I arrived I was exhausted. But the excitement to be there, surrounded by 11 other brilliant companies with bold ideas to shape the future of the maritime industry, gave me all the energy I needed. A huge thank you to Richard Holdsworth and Matthew Treadwell for their support leading up to the event, to the judges Paul Dean, Steven Jones MNM FRSA FNI, Tony Foster, Claudene Sharp-Patel and Monica Kohli, OBE for their valuable insights, and to everyone who attended and made the day so engaging. Last but not least a massive thank you to the BioBright team Daria Redford, Clare Donald, Ayrton Barzasi, Luke Pawlikow, Vivian Okafor and Italo Crispim, without your dedication and hard work, this wouldn’t have been possible. I’ve learned so much from this experience and from the inspiring entrepreneurs I had the chance to share the stage with.
