I think you might have the experience to do this I've got a theory, it's based on years of recruiting at all levels in the media industry, and increasingly at senior level We work in an extremely incestuous industry We generally only recruit from within the industry, but most hiring in media is also done through referrals. This, over time, creates strategic and operational blind spots due to the subconscious bias that it's hard to escape from when hiring is weighted to heavily towards recruitment via referrals over long periods. Anyway...... (take a breath Chris) 🧘 If the media industry is hard-coded to recruit within sector verticals, how can we create value at the top that doesn't violate the coding but that creates value? 🤔 Cross-pollinate via NED (Non-Executive Director) appointments Taking a NED role is a great move for senior leaders because: 1️⃣ They get to exercise their intellectual abilities 2️⃣ They get to bring the equity associated to their experience to new environments, which is intellectually rewarding 3️⃣ They get exposed to companies that are within the sector, but could be significantly different in culture, size, revenue and offering, which is great for personal development 4️⃣ There can be various types of compensation on offer, sometimes paid, sometimes equity, all appreciated 😃 For companies, it can be great because: 1️⃣ It's a strategic breath of fresh air. New ideas, new perspectives. 2️⃣ Leaders bring options for cultural change: Good for evolution. 3️⃣ New NEDS can challenge the status quo in diplomatic and tactful ways: Good to diarm far within board structures that have stopped evolving due to a static culture I'm keen on this idea, and it's a great way to create movement that benefits the industry. This could be a great way for emerging companies to pick up a talented influence to help them grow Or for a large well-established media tech firm to engage a NED who has worked in the broadcast arena for years Or for a larger company to embrace a more creative entrepreneurial influence by engaging a proven start-up founder who is unlikely to ever want to "work" in a big company, but would love to have a part-time NED role Let me know what you think, I'd love to know

InterTalent bolsters team with senior agents’ pair   Sarah Walsh and Millie Lean have worked with the likes of the Gladiators and social media phenomenon Francis Bourgeois   InterTalent has taken on a pair of senior agents to strengthen its ambition to be an industry representation leader across entertainment, digital publishing, live events, and brand partnerships.   Sarah Walsh and Millie Lean have joined the London-based agency with a pedigree in TV and media industry representation.   Walsh most recently working at Dan Baldwin’s Hungry Bear Media talent arm HB Talent, where she managed the stars of the Gladiators reboot. Prior to this, she has worked in talent representation at Crown Talent and Mirador, representing the likes of Brian Conley, Cherry Healey, and Danny Beard.   Meanwhile, Lean was previously a senior talent manager at YMU and is best-known for discovering and developing viral star Francis Bourgeois, securing high-profile brand deals with Gucci, Dior, and Lego, as well as a publishing deal for The Trainspotter’s Notebook. Her publishing acumen has also seen her secure book deals for stars such as Tom Daley and Stephen Mulhern. Lean was also named a Broadcast Hot Shot in 2024.   At InterTalent they are tasked with building a vibrant, inclusive client roster and ambition to elevate distinctive talent across the industry.   The full-service management and rights agency represents UK stars including Amber Gill, Christine McGuinness, Dame Joan Collins, Francis Bourgeois, Maura Higgins, Omid Djalili, Ross Kemp, and Susanna Reid.   “Sarah and Millie bring exactly the kind of vision, creativity, and integrity that defines InterTalent” said InterTalent managing director Alex Segal. “Their arrival enhances our ability to support clients across traditional and emerging platforms, and we’re delighted to welcome them at this pivotal time.”   The pair join following the recent launch of InterTalent’s Project 30 Ventures, an investment arm dedicated to nurturing creative founders and IP and the creation of a live and corporate events division.

It’s been heartening to finally see big name directors, writers and producers speaking out about the crisis in UK TV production over the past week. Their collective voices raising awareness of UK TV’s inability to afford to make high end shows is really important and their calls for levies on streamers and tax breaks to help fund HETV production have been hugely welcome. But… All of this ignores the harsh reality that the vast majority who are unable to find work are in that position because low and mid budget shows are disappearing. With the axing of River City this week, the UK’s remaining soaps are now a seriously endangered species. These vital proving grounds for new talent and mainstays of mid-career folks are dwindling to nothing. The talent drain is exponential at this point. So, the relentless focus on hugely expensive HETV is rubbing salt into the wounds of those who simply want a chance to make a modest living doing what they love. Welcome though the voices of Peter Kosminsky, Jack Thorne, Patrick Spence and Jane Featherstone are, they are - bluntly - not enough. UK TV needs an immediate and urgent action plan to alleviate the agonising employment drought. We need all the major players to call an emergency summit to find a way forward. Every branch of the industry needs to be part of this conversation. How can we work together to make TV not just survive but thrive again? We’re a siloed industry of freelancers and salaried execs. We’re used to being in competition with each other whilst pretending that we’re ‘all mates together’. That position is now a zero sum game. No matter who wins, we all lose. We need to put competition aside and rejuvenate the sector before there’s literally nothing left to revive. We also need DCMS, Lisa Nandy and Chris Bryant to stop fiddling while Rome burns, accept UK TV needs a mixed economy, and actively work with the industry to help it to fund and foster one. If they really believe UK TV production is ‘world leading’ and a ‘major driver of economic growth’ then they can no longer stand by and watch as it fades into irrelevance and the UK simply becomes a backlot for Hollywood and streamer cash. If UK TV’s public service and commercial broadcasters are to survive and evolve we need to find a way to make more TV not less. Employ more people, offer more opportunities, tell more innovative and relevant stories, be more creative, evolve to meet the future. Struggling freelancers across the industry have been screaming about this crisis and desperately asking for help for nearly two years now. And all that’s happened is more shows have been axed, more experienced people have been forced to walk away and fewer people have been able to find a way in. These major players coming forwards to speak out about what’s happening and call for change is a hugely important step. But now we need much, much more than words. We need action.
