We’re still excited about the return of the CIAA Football Championship to Durham! It was incredible to see fans fill the stands at Durham County Memorial Stadium for the thrilling matchup between Virginia Union University and Johnson C. Smith University. Congrats to Johnson C. Smith on their big win! Huge thanks to the organizations that helped bring this championship back to Durham. A special thank you goes out to our General Services staff, whose hard work behind the scenes ensures that Durham County Memorial Stadium continues to be a choice destination for sports and community events in the Triangle!

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dana Conners as the new director of the Durham County Library, effective January 5, 2026. Selected after a nationwide search, Conners brings more than 30 years of leadership experience in public libraries across North Carolina and Texas, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, New Hanover, and Austin Public Library. Conners was selected for her leadership, experience, and thoughtful vision for public libraries. Her work has included new library openings, long-range planning, and collaborative partnerships that expand access to resources and support lifelong learning. “Dana’s experience, strategic focus, and commitment to community service make her well-suited to lead Durham County Library into its next chapter,” said Assistant County Manager Joanne Pierce. As Library Director, Conners will oversee library operations, including strategic planning, programming, staff development, and partnerships that promote equitable access to information and educational opportunities. Durham County Veteran Services invites the community to join in honoring service members and their families at its 14th Annual Veterans Day Recognition and Celebration Program, scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, November 10. The event is free and open to the public. The event will be held inside Conference Rooms A, B, and C on the second floor of the County’s Human Services Building at 414 E. Main Street in downtown Durham. The theme for this year’s event is “Loyalty and Service: Honoring all Who Served" intending to recognize the contributions of every individual who has served in the United States Armed Forces, regardless of their branch or length of service. The program will include the presentation, posting, and retiring of the colors done by Hillside High School’s Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), a “Walk of Honor” for veterans from all eras of service, a keynote address from Durham County Department of Public Health Director Dr. Rodney Jenkins, and a Prisoner of War/Missing In Action presentation. Join the Holt Brothers Construction and Durham County Government team for an outreach and information session for the Project BUILD renovation at the Shoppes of Hope Valley (3825 S. Roxboro Street, Suite 122) on Thursday, November 20 at 3:30 p.m. This project is the renovation office upfit of approximately 4,900 square feet in a previously occupied retail space. It's Employee Appreciation Week at Durham County Government! Our Human Resources Department has scheduled educational, stress relieving, hunger busting, and other fun events from Oct. 13-17 for our employees to take a break from their jobs and celebrate the hard work we do each day! Today on Day 1, we held a Durham County Jeopardy contest with employees gathered in a conference room in Admin II as well as virtually via Teams. In the end, "Team Onion" aka, Department of Social Services' Malcolm Toby, came away victorious as the employee with the most #DCo knowledge! Congratulations Malcolm, who is a Community Social Services Assistant. We thank all of our nearly 2,000 employees for their dedication and hard work! #DCoRocks

Introducing the 2025 Innovate Durham Cohort! On Wednesday, September 24, we officially launched this year’s program in partnership with Forward Cities. The kickoff event brought together our cohort of entrepreneurs, Durham County Government staff, and program facilitators for an evening of networking and collaboration. Highlights included speed pitches from the entrepreneurs, who will spend the coming months testing their ideas, gathering data, and refining products—all with the goal of improving our services and the lives of Durham County residents. The 2025 cohort includes: Cashem Holland, Financial BOSS | Financial BOSS is a nonprofit organization that educates, empowers, and elevates children in the areas of money management and financial literacy. Cash is being championed by Durham County Library. Nijil Persaud, Novexa | Novexa is a health innovation company building healthier, more resilient communities through preventive care, sustainability, and equity. Nijil is being championed by Durham Cooperative Extension. We’re excited to work alongside these innovators as they bring fresh perspectives and creative solutions to #DCo!
