  • 🚀 Big steps for European biotech! In the European Biosolutions Coalition, we're thrilled to see momentum building around a potential Bio-IPCEI – a major initiative that could supercharge Europe’s bio-industry 💚   We're eagerly awaiting the high-level political decision in November 2025, and we strongly support this move. The bio-industry is key to Europe's competitiveness, geopolitical resilience, and the green transition 🌍   🔍 What’s an IPCEI? It stands for Important Project of Common European Interest – large cross-border projects co-financed by EU Member States to support R&D, innovation, and the first industrial deployment of cutting-edge technologies in strategic areas.   While we wait, the Joint European Forum for IPCEI (JEF-IPCEI), made up of Member State authorities and the European Commission, has already started laying the groundwork for an IPCEI in biotech, with a strong focus on biomanufacturing 🧬🏭   Led by Estonia, Finland, and Germany, a dedicated JEF-IPCEI Working Group is now exploring the potential for an IPCEI in: Bio-based chemicals 🧪 Bio-based materials 🧵 Key components for food & feed 🍽️   This is a huge opportunity to accelerate European biotech through strategic investments and streamlined regulation – paving the way for groundbreaking bio-companies to thrive 🌱

  • 🇳🇴🤝🇪🇺 Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Per Anker-Nilssen from our Norwegian partner NHO to the European Biosolutions Coalition! Since NHO joined the Coalition in June, we’ve been excited to deepen our collaboration - and yesterday’s meeting reaffirmed our shared ambitions for a resilient, sustainable, and competitive European biosolutions sector. We discussed next steps in our partnership, touched upon Norwegian best practice biosolutions cases, and had a valuable exchange on priorities - particularly within the feed sector. It’s clear that Norway’s agenda is well aligned with European goals, and we see great potential in building strong cross-border bonds together. We’re looking forward to continuing the collaboration with NHO and to unlocking the full potential of biosolutions across Europe 💡🌍

  • 🚨 Europe at a Crossroads: Time to Scale Biosolutions! 🌍 Around a year ago, Mario Draghi warned that Europe must reform or risk becoming irrelevant📉 Now, he warns us again: “the EU has lost the illusion of being a player on the international stage”.   While the ambition is clear, action is still missing. In the European Biosolutions Coalition, we believe that biosolutions are a great place to start: 💡 Europe needs bold investments in prosperous start-ups and scaling innovation to stay competitive. As the global race for biosolutions accelerates, China and the U.S. are surging ahead with strategic investments and streamlined regulations. Meanwhile, Europe’s slow regulatory pace threatens to push groundbreaking bio-companies to scale elsewhere.   At the European Biosolutions Coalition, we urge governments to: 🔬 Substantially invest in scaling biosolutions 🌱 Recognize biosolutions as strategic priorities in EU industrial policy 🏗️ Support technologies like: 🕸️ Bio-degradable silk from spiderwebs 🍄 Mycelium-based packaging replacing plastics 🛣️ Sustainable asphalt alternatives 🌾 Protein-based biofungicides as eco-friendly crop protection 🍼 Biotech-produced HMOs for sustainable infant nutrition   🌿 These innovations reduce fossil fuel dependency, enhance sustainability, and create value-generating infrastructure.   📢 Europe must act now to lead the transition to a biobased economy, reduce agricultural import dependency, and secure its position as a global sustainability leader. 💪   Let’s not miss this moment. The future is bio-based. 🔄🌍

  • 👋 Good to see you, BioIndustry Association (BIA)! Just this Tuesday, we had the pleasure of hosting important guests at the Coalition Secretariat in Copenhagen - Jane Wall and Linda Bedenik of our British partner 🇬🇧✨ As the Coalition continues to grow, now with 14 industry organisations across Europe as ever important partners in the Coalition, it is always wonderful to have them visit the Secretariat 🌍 🇪🇺 This was the first time the now strengthened Coalition got together with both BIA and our growing Danish partner, DI Biosolutions. As you can see on the team photo, with all three together, we make quite the team 💪 🌱 At an important time, too. The Biotech Act and Bioeconomy Strategy are both fast approaching, and we are lucky to have partners like the BIA with us in such a crucial time for biosolutions. We'll be looking forward to further collaboration with them 🤝 🙌 Thanks for joining us in Copenhagen, BIA! We’ll be seeing you again.

  • 🌱 A deep dive on biosolutions   Have you ever wondered – wait, what is precision fermentation exactly? Or what do we mean when we talk about bacteria in the world of biosolutions? Does the five second rule apply? 🦠   We get it. Biosolutions, while technically simple, can be an incredibly complex field  to navigate as it continues to grow and rapidly emerge.   Luckily, we’ve got your back: we’ve written a glossary that provides clarity and guidance through the scientific terms and phrases we use when exploring this world of microbes 🧪🪴   Over the next few weeks and months, we’ll be doing a deep dive into some of these terms to show that biosolutions aren’t something novel or complicated - they’re simply nature’s toolbox, something humans have been using for thousands of years 🛠️🌿   Today, we invite you to take a glance at the full glossary we’ve prepared and will continue to update 📖   Are there any terms or phrases that define biosolutions for you that we’ve missed? 🤔 We’d love to hear from you! Either way, you can grab your digital copy of our glossary on our website below. Link in comments 🔗

  • 🌍 No Deal on Plastic – Now’s the Time for Biobased Solutions Plastic pollution is becoming an urgent threat to humans, animals, and ecosystems. 🐢🌱 Following the collapse of negotiations at the UN Summit, INC 5.2, yesterday, the dream of a legally binding global plastic treaty has faded. More than 94 countries rallied for a deal to regulate plastic production. Yet today, we produce over 400 million tonnes of plastic annually, and only 9% of plastic waste is recycled. ♻️ But there’s hope. 🔬 Biosolutions are transforming the way we tackle plastic waste. By harnessing nature, we can create materials that are: 🌾 Biodegradable 🔁 Infinitely recyclable 🌍 Better for the planet European biosolutions companies are already leading the way—developing eco-friendly packaging, converting plastic waste into sustainable materials, and driving the green transition forward. 🚛🌿 Let’s scale innovation. Let’s invest in biosolutions. Let’s build a greener, smarter Europe. 💚 Please note that this picture has been generated with AI
